Window Love: Hubcap Trim Turned Portal Windows

We're always excited to see what projects our favorite interior designers take on in their own homes, and Erika McPherson Powell of Urban Grace Interiors certainly does not disappoint! Wanting to give their mundane garage doors a little (understatement) character, she and her equally-creative husband embarked on an impressive DIY adventure that combined two of our favorite things: impeccable style and the transformation of ordinary objects into chic and functional design elements...

They liked the idea of round metal windows to counterbalance the straight lines and to compliment the steel features of the carriage house, but they had to search for the perfect materials to see their vision through. After contemplating everything from the rims of stainless steel mixing bowls to actual port holes, Erika's husband, whom she describes as a "civil Engineer by day, and an antique car lover by night," finally came up with the brilliant idea of the hubcap rims.

Here is the process they went through to achieve the perfect look...

1. cut, painted ("hardware" from Sherwin Williams), and attached beadboard plywood to the existing garage doors (salvaged from a neighbor's old garage) with stainless steel bolts

2. removed the existing garage door widows

3. used a template of the hubcap rims, a router, and a jig saw to cut the holes where the existing windows had been into circles big enough to fit the hubcap rims

4. inserted the trim on the front of the garage doors, and pried the rim's "teeth" open so that they would snap around the wood of the door

5. inserted heavy-gauge plexiglas for the window pane, and attached it by screwing it through the nearest bolts around the window.

Thank you Erika for sharing your genius window solution with us!
