Like Aaron, we also did a little home improvement painting over the weekend and we love the color result! While picking the perfect color for a room is not always the simplest task, we had a little trick to make this project easy and fun - House Beautiful's PaintBrush tool. We knew we wanted to paint over our clay red wall to a gray tone but didn't know what time of gray. Slate gray? Pewter gray? Blue-ish gray? Check out our choice after the jump....
Picking The Perfect Paint Color For You
House Beautiful's PaintBrush Tool
We used this dining room as the template to pick our paint color.
We decided to go with Stonington Gray. We knew we wanted to a lighter tone that had a blue-ish tint so it would change with the natural light. And after playing with the PaintBrush tool (honestly we probably spent well over an hour - it's fun!), we found our color.
Here's our before and after. The ease of the HB site, the various room templates available and the color selection made this a good resource. Plus if you are looking to paint additional pieces in your room (like the trim or any accents), the PaintBrush tool will pick them for you based on your main wall color choice.

I love that color! My bedroom is a very similar color from Dunn Edwards called Porpoise.
I picked mine by learning from countless painting projects - if you want blue, look in the gray section of the paint deck. If you want yellow, look in the tan/cream section of the paint deck. Pick a few, buy sample quarts, paint them on various walls in different parts of the room then live with and judge at different times of day. Go back to paint store and buy more quarts based off of initial assessment of previous quarts. Make a choice!

I use Behr's Color Smart for this, as this is the paint that I have the easiest access to (Home Depot).

The after is lovely and calming but I have to say I like the before color as well.
And love that Ikea print . . . must get one of those. I like their giant world map too.
