apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Southwest #18: Brooke and Cort's Downtown Walk-Up

Name: Brooke and Cort
Location: Salt Lake City, Utah
Size: 590 sq. ft. apartment
Rent/Own: Rent

What is the advantage of SMALL? I love small spaces. I wouldn't have it any other way. I am not a big fan of cleaning a big space since I used to clean offices in high school for money. We like Dwell magazine and have adopted a smaller is greener philosophy. I hope to have a cool pre-fab home one day like my dad back in Virginia. His home is small and cool. I really think this is simply a part of my DNA and my ideology! My fiance was not raised like this, but he has adopted the philosophy and embraced it. ;D

What's your favorite resource for your home?

I am a total DIY girl. I make what I can't find or buy. I am super frugal cause I am in graduate school and on a tight budget. My fiance likes to make the big purchases so he looks on craigslist or CB2. I shop at thrift-stores, flea markets, antique stores, and IKEA, Anthropologie for accessories. I splurge on a few items, but I slwoly collect over the years. I hope we get some new things when we get married in June to completely pull things together!

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home?

I love our bedroom. It is so bright and cheerful. I have all my plants and orchids in the windowsill and I love waking up in there. I also love the nick knacks I have resourced over the years that are scattered about. I especially love the different deer. Oh, and our new dining table is awesome! Now, I need to find the perfect chairs!

I'm starting to be influenced by the commenters who say that these apartments are nice, but not the WOW needed to win the contest.

I liked it but I think painted walls would've been nice.

My fav part was the amazing cracked radiator.

A lot of nice things, but somehow they just Were there, no cohesion...

Cute and cozy but not particularly remarkable. I always feel bad saying that - because I think this is a really nice apartment, but its lacking the kind "wow" things that make a place REALLY cool.

Cute and cosy. I really like the third picture with the crazy radiator and the pink flowers peeking out at the bottom.

I really want to paint too. Unfortunately, this is a rental and white walls are something that we have to live with for a while. It is so hard to capture the place in 5 pics, but I tried my best. Additionally, we're working with a shoestring budget and very little time so I am happy with the outcome thus far. In a year or so it will come together much more! I am sure of it! ;D

gwalabu: The bedspread is IKEA but I have an Anthropologie bedspread that I rotate in and out too. I like the sheets that go with the other spread better, but the fiance says it is too girly. Oh well.

It already did end, on the 14th. I assume they're still catching up on posting all the entries.

I love the kitchen and the bathroom. The rest is ok.

An aside. I keep on loving how the Malm bed looks, but it feels cheap at Ikea. How's it holding up?

Ariel: The bed is fine. We've had it a year now and it is very sturdy for an IKEA bed. I even managed to find a way to store winter clothes under it (it is really low to the ground). I am sure we'll eventually upgrade, but the price was right for the style. It doesn't feel as light in person with it set up. Maybe it is just me though. I actually saw it in INSTYLE Magazine the first time and had to hunt it down. Some tv actress had it in a different color.

Congrats on bucking the hyper-McMansion trend of SLC, Brooke! I thought your place looked rather cozy.

Thanks for the mini review on the Malm bed too. I've been considering it for a while now... perhaps a trip to Sandy is in order. ;)

Crittercub: Thanks. I don't think we could even afford a SLC McMansion, but I would totally oppose the idea if the option were even on the horizon! I'd opt for the Aves. Ha! It is a strange phenomena here with the gigantic gas guzzling SUV's everywhere and the inversion/haze burn conditions skyrocketing. Why would the developers keep building huge homes? You'd think we were in LA with the smog, minus the fun atmosphere, great resources to buy for the home, and the fantastic weather!

Okay. I will quit my snarky rant. Yes, check the bed out. We upgraded to get the most expensive slats. It is super comfy, never creaks, and holds up well. I wish it had a coat of polyurethane on it to protect it though. I am worried that I will get scratches on it cause I am klutzy. It can seem like it is in the way when I race in from class, dump the mail, and scoot through the two foot wide space to get to the bathroom! However, we bought it when IKEA opened out there in Draper. ;D

I love your place, and its a super cool. I totally get where you're coming from, and holy cow you did an awesome job! This is the kind of place that could do miracles with the money... :)

I love the silhouettes on the bedroom wall. Are they actual antiques or reproductions?

Gets a "cool" from me. Cute place, but Smallest/Coolest? Not really. Definitely cute though!

i like it. i'd group all that small bedroom art in one collection. and since you diy, consider painting the radiator.
