What is the advantage of SMALL? Small fuels my imagination and gets me thinking strategically about ways to work with space. The need to streamline sharpens my mind. Small comforts me when I retreat from the sprawling city. Small is affordable, and it gives me all I need.

What's your favorite resource for your home?
I got most of my furniture from craigslist, and get design ideas from catalogs, magazines, and the internet.
What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home?
I have many favorite elements in my small, cool home. I love the whole apartment because it has everything I wanted--light walls and natural light, wooden floors, a bathtub, a laundry in the building, and a separate office--all on my tiny grad student budget! I was so excited when I found it and every day I feel grateful for this space. It means independence, which gives me courage and hope.
I live and work here, so I've tried to make it an inspirational and peaceful refuge. It's a work in progress, and my office really needs re-organizng, but I am happy in my little home just as it is.

Lovely. For what it's worth, I think you'd enjoy your art more if you hung it at eye level. But it's a cool place.

I agree - the placement of the artwork is all wrong. But it's an easy fix. Get larger artwork and hang it lower.

Do you really have to go through your closet to get to the bathroom??
Wow. I once lived in a place where the tiny 3/4 bathroom was just off the kitchen sink. That was odd enough but I wouldn't like going through the closet.
Otherwise, nice job carving out the study instead of feeling you needed to have the traditional dining space there.
I do agree that the art placement/sizing in the main area is a bit off kilter. Even if you don't want to get larger artwork, the grouping over the sofa should be hung lower.

As a normal house, I'd say this is fine, even cute. But as a contestant, I find this lackluster. It has that "first apartment out of college" feel to it.

i can't take my eyes off the nice floors.

Love the floors, too. So shiny.
If you do have to go thru the closet to get to the bath, that is incentive to keep things neat.
Question, where do you eat?

Nice furniture placement, good divider between the bed and living room.
I like the Blue Sky. Personally the office looks cramped to me, but how great to have it away from your relaxation areas! I can't think of a better use for that space myself.
On Small Space, Big Style there was an apartment that had the bathroom through the closet. The owners pointed out that if they were having guests over and one of them was still in the shower as guests were arriving, they could appear fully dressed and not have to streak across the apartment in a towel.
To me 1st apartment decor consists of Futon or old couch that was free off the curb. Milk crate end tables, and brick and board shelves with lively posters for decoration.
This place has thought out purchased furniture and decor.
I also love large real oil paintings, but it takes a while to find and afford them.
I won't pay a lot for a print, I'd rather wait until I can get the real thing. They cost $5 to $10 to make and I don't like being ripped off.
Anyhow, When you are ready and find or make the art you like, you have gotten advice for how to hang it.
I am a gardener. Gardens are never finished. Homes never are either.

The most cluttered and unorganized one so far. Not cool.

@gustaf, that's totally unhelpful.
To my eyes, it looks lovely and sunny and warm and friendly. I like the way you've separated the bed from the couch. Definitely cool.

dblitz-
i've been in plenty of houses where the entrance to the bathroom is thru a closet hallway. even very big houses have that arrangement sometimes. and so did the set of SJP's apt on sex and the city.

Totally agree, artwork needs to be hung much lower and if you can, go larger, right now they look much lost on the expanse of wall you have, even that small photo over the bed looks lost in a sea of white.
And I'd replace the lamps on either side of the couch for larger ones if you intend to read since they are small, a 40W bulb is probably all they can take, not enough to read comfortably by.
Otherwise, a good start, just need to think how you actually use the space, ie, for reading, craftwork etc and design appropriately.

How did I miss commenting before - where are you at (building name) in Koreatown, if you don't mind me asking? The floors are great!

hi everyone
thanks so much for your comments! (I had no idea till today that they had posted the pics of my apartment.)
your advice is great.
the couch *is* hard on the eyes. I can't afford another one right now though, so I just try not to look at it :)
the pics over the sofa are part of a 9 piece set. I was trying different frames on them so the pic I included was mid-experiment. I found the frames I want, but they didn't have all 9. still waiting!
I am about to start on sorting out my office.
I think the floors are so gorgeous because they have decades of lacquer on them giving them a super-shiny rich surface but with the warmth of the old wood. my building name is la bertha.

yeah, the bathroom is through the closet. it's odd, but it actually has its benefits. mainly that it gives the bathroom additional separation from the main area.
