We love getting packages in the mail and around this time of year we start getting plenty. Some are gifts we've ordered online for friends and family and some are gifts for us! We can't wait to tear it all open and see what's inside. Unfortunately that leaves a mound of packaging in its wake. Most problematic is the Styrofoam. That is until...
...we found out some great news. While on the phone to the LA Department of Sanitation to see about getting the lid to our trash can fixed, we heard a recorded message that told us that styrofoam can be recycled in the city of LA.
Now the best thing is to not use styrofoam (aka: polystyrene) at all. You can inquire before you order online what kind of packaging a company uses and/or request that they not use styrofoam. You can also make the decision to only order packages that don't use is. After all, it essentially never breaks down and pollutes, well, everything.
But it seems especially around this time of year it's difficult to entirely avoid it. And when that happens, if your styrofoam is clean, then you can put it in your blue recycling bin for curbside recycling. From the LA City Bureau's site:
What You Can Recycle at the Curb
All Clean Polystyrene (Styrofoam®) including:
cups, containers, and packaging such as egg shell cartons, block packaging, and clamshell packaging.
Now it sounds like peanuts are included, but just in case, you can also recycle peanuts at a loose fill station. Here are the listings for locations in the 310 area code.
If you list peanuts on the free part of Craigslist or freecycle there's usually someone who can reuse them as well.

And make sure to be careful with the packing-peanuts that break down in water. My overly curious cat decided to try and eat one when I wasn't looking as I opened a package. He quickly vomitted and spent the weekend recovering.

I wish we had this in NYC!

When I lived in NYC, I found a place on the UES like in the 3rd and 85th area that would take peanuts.

Thanks Laure! I've been trying to find a way to recycle my non-peanut styrofoam in LA. This totally rocks!!

Has anyone tried gasoline? It makes great napalm for the holidays. It will even burn on the surface of water since styro floats.
