January 4, 2008

You have to imagine these really large. As a Christmas present to ourselves, Sara Kate and I left the baby with her mother and checked into a sweet little hotel in Sag Harbor for TWO nights just before New Year's. In wandering around empty handed - for the first time in 15 months - we stepped into the amazing Ruby Beets where I spotted the absolutely gorgeous photograph above.

Printed large and hung on the wall ready to be showcased behind a sofa or other really large object, this photograph of a gently breaking wave captured all the calmness and ease that I happened to be feeling at that particular time. I wanted a copy OR I wanted to run right down to the water and try to take a picture like this myself. What a great little vacation it was.

Renate Aller is a Swiss born artist who now lives in New York, but apparently also has a house by the sea, where she has taken all of these pics. First shown at the Adamson Gallery in 2006 in a show called Fixed Coordinates, each pic was taken from exactly the same location over time. Taken by the seascape, Aller clearly moved her camera around for many of the others.

Renate Aller's work can be found at Ruby Beets and the Adamson Gallery. Her website, www.renatealler.com, seems to be broken. Someone, please, give her a hand!

Best, Maxwell

The Renate Aller photos are just breathtaking! Can you give us an idea of their cost? I can't seem to find any info on either gallery's web sites.

Thanks!
