apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Cute, isn't it? This almost looks like a bathroom in a summer lake house, but we're actually in a brownstone in Brooklyn. The wife and I picked this color at the same time we selected a dark brown for the bedroom next to it. We were jumping up and down with excitement while the husband wondered what he would tell his mother...

As I recall there was a problem: the wainscoting was a weird shade of gray, and the net effect was that of a hippie apartment in Haight-Ashbury in the 60's. My clients were unsure about this color, but painted the trim in the off-white pictured here to tone things down a bit and this is the result.

Devotees of this column will know that in almost every instance I prefer wood trim that is painted off-white, unless it is stained.

And voila! Instant charm.

This is so nice. Can you list the off-white color as well? Also, if patrick(the other one) is out there, can you spy the conch?

WOW, I wouldn't have picked out that color... but now I would!!!! Looks great and I like the different handles on the cabinet. What were the other possible colors you guys were going to use?

Interesting use of beadboard.

Has anyone used beadboard with a more modern sink?

Or are the two not compatible?

In response to Keith - I have a friend who use beadboard with a modern Ikea sink and cabinet and it looks great.

I love this color and have been toying with painting our living room walls a slightly paler shade.

Would that be too, too much color for us?

This is both soothing and light-hearted at the same time.

I so wish I could just see past the door to the brown bedroom, I love the combination of purple and brown! At least tell me the color name/brand, and I'll check my fan deck.

Mama Chilanga, in your living room, a light violet would be a neutral background that ties all the bright colors together. I think that paint would be the big step to go from a room with great pieces to a great room.

Oh -- and I don't mean it's not good now. I'm talking "magazine layout" great.

How much paler than Angelina would you go, Wende?

I love this colour, especially when it is paired with periwinkle...

I have always wanted a lavender bathroom...

I have to go with Noah on this one. I don't care for the color; nor the look of the bathroom. Something about it immediately says "girls' college apartment bathroom".

Very pretty. Soft and soothing. And a refreshing change from the black-white color continuum.

is it just me or does that cabinet look dirty?

I like lavendar, but I really believe that if you are going to use it, you HAVE to have PURE WHITE. Anything even a tinge darker will dirty.

Change the wainscoating and cabinet to a WHITE. It will then have a Fresh look. Not a dank, dark, dirty look.
