Dear AT,
Can you do something on cool small toilets for NYC apts? Its very confusing and I'm also concerned about saving water but Consumer Reports hasn't evaluated them since 2002...what is the smallest energy saving toilet out there?
Thanks, Gretchen
Small and water saving seems to be the crux of this question. This is what we have found:
1. Kohler Rialto
2. Best available toilet flushes 1.5 gallons per flush (typical is 3.5) (FEMP)
3. A long essay on small toilets (Askthebuilder.com)
4. Toilets from history and around the world (Bestweb.net)
5. Kohler's # 800.456.4537 for more questions
(Thanks, Gretchen!) MGR

The best small medium priced toilet I've heard of is the Toto ultimate (about 250$ 2 1/2 years ago). I polled residents in my building when I needed to change to a low flow model upon purchasing a unit I'd been renting and this model won. A neighbor even invited me in to see and flush his model and look at another ready to install still in a box. I'm in Los Angeles and property sales have to change over to low flow.
I've been happy with the Toto ultimate ever since. Not one double flush for undescribables.

Dear AT,
I wonder if you could do an article on very small kitchens, perhaps on units of a half-fridge and sink along with a stove or with a separate stove? My kitchen is only 62" x 57" and the doorway into this kitchen is only 25". Is this impossible?
I compliment you on your site.
Thank you,

Duravit makes
a wall mounted "Happy D." toilet that projects 21.25" from the wall but I
think it runs around $1000 and requires a plumber to install the tank
inside the wall. It's a pity we don't have more of the European toilets
that have two flush push buttons for better water consumption.
I just recently redid my bathroom and put in a new Toto Dorian toilet. It's great, nice and small and uses very little water. It has "power flush" and is really quiet.
It retails normally for about $750 but I got it on ebay for about $400.

A couple of years ago I researched the same thing. Was totally re-doing an impossibly small bathroom. Ended up with the Kohler Rialto, and was quite pleased. It is compact and flushed well. I would purchase it again if I were re-doing another bathroom.
I have a Toto also. Good, small-ish size, very efficient and strong flush--even as a low-flow.
Whatever you chose, please do not make it the American Standard 1.6 gpf. Good numbers to be sure- and my only option for a short rough-in from the landlord selected vendor of record; Home Depot.
Alas, all interior parts have too much slop and it sits like the children's model.
friends place in Florence ITALY had this crazy little toilet in second bath that was electric, I presume to boost the water pressure...

re-- toilets
I just saw on HGTV a toilet that has two flush modes, for either soid or liquid waste.
That soooo should be mandatory to the industry.
In europe, dual-flush (one low flush, one more substantial) toilets are the norm. My parents recently renovated their bathroom and were unable to find one. They should be widespread. All the benefit of low-flush with a built-in solution to the most common problem.
