Cheap chipboard and lightweight bedmakers everywhere are trumped. So many of my clients have to store items under their beds (even though it is not good for the energy of your bedroom), that I have been looking for the nicest bed elevators available. Rather than plastic, I have been looking for sculptured wooden block (I know they exist). HOWEVER, I stumbled upon a better solution. These beds are manufactured by Pacific Rim and sold by Green Home, a remarkable marketplace/store for green products, and are high enough (14 1/2") to accomodate three rolling drawers beneath. In addition, these beds are THE BEST for you, your children and the earth:
"Each piece is hand-rubbed with a finish of tung oil and pure beeswax to highlight the natural beauty of this distinctive Maple hardwood. They are free of toxic glues, formaldehyde and particle board and considered environmentally safe for your children's bedroom and nursery."
And then there is the price. While more expensive than a futon frame on Broadway, these are reasonably priced at $425 for a Queen (but shipping will run you another $216, doh!) and $90 per drawer. Other styles are available. You have less reason now to buy a cheap bed that you will soon throw out. MGR
*thanks to Finn for price correction...

err, that's $195 in additional shipping for a queen. the bed itself costs $425. here's the total price according to the green home page:
Subtotal: 425.00
Shipping: 216.25
Total: $641.25 + Tax (where applicable)
Do you have any source for good beds in New York City, where we could save on the shipping cost?
I have to admit, it is a tough one. I would recommend Pompanoosuc Mills (http://www.pompanoosucmills.com) which is not as inexpensive, but just as natural and good. Or I would try a search for wood furniture in Vermont.... I will do this soon and whatever I find I will post.
Um, and feel free to flay me for this, but is there something horrible about Gothic Cabinet Craft that everyone except me knows about?
For example, their Queen platform bed?
Sorry, the URL was stripped out.

is the short version.
Gothic Cabinet Craft is a good example of getting what you pay for. There is nothing wrong with their furniture except that it is unfinished, lightweight, and not too stylish. It is on a par with IKEA in a way, but far easier to shop at (their locations are a big plus). The finishing is a big deal, too. I bought two stools and because I didn't finish them the wood separated from humidity after a few months.
I would like to hear more on this subject as well.
