West Elm Bed Roundup 2007

A few year's ago The Elm had trouble with their beds, but we trust that has all been taken care of. In the meantime, they've continued to ramp up the new designs and inch towards a more and more sophisticated look. Their strength is the ability to mix and match headboards with their basic frames and keep the price WAY down. Here's a look at their latest collection from top pick to bottom (not all headboards are included).

I recently bought the West Elm bed frame you have featured last in the posting sequence (without the headboard).

It was easy to put together and seems solid enough. I recommend adding felt to the bottom of the legs, though. If you move the bed even slightly it scratches up the floors.

I just recently got the handwoven rope headboard and frame for my new apartment. I was looking for am inexpensive, quick solution, but when it arrived I was so surprised! It was much nicer, richer, and solid than I had expected. Plesantly surprised!

Are you able to use a mattress frame with these beds?

i'm really tempted to buy either the overlapping squares or the morocco headboard in the dark brown to attach to my existing frame.

i love the designs but i'm worried about the quality. does anybody have either one of those headboards?

it's the silver ottoman that i've got my eye on for the bedroom...

I have the overlapping squares headboard and frame (the taller of the two frame height options). We have a very thick mattress (I think 15" or something) so we don't use a box spring with it, although I think you're supposed to be able to.

I think the quality is pretty good but not awesome. West Elm definitely fixed the "collapsing bed" problem they used to have--I read those old threads, and it appears they used to have just one supporting leg in the middle of the bed, and long slats that went from one side of the bed to the other. Now they have a long supporting plank down the middle of the bed that has 2 or 3 supporting legs, and the slats are just half the width of the bed, so it's much sturdier now.

The material of the bed feels fairly solid, but the finish (we have the dark finish) is definitely a laminate, and in one part of the bed frame it's peeled away slightly.

The beds are of the put-it-together-yourself type, which was good in that we could fit it up the stairs of our house, and it was not that hard to put together. However, I think it does result in the structure being less solid than if it came as one solid piece. We have been intending to tighten the bolts because we notice some movement in the headboard particularly.

All in all, though, I am happy with it for $500 or whatever--it's attractive and was much more affordable than a lot of the beds we looked at.

I think that first headboard looks like a giant shredded wheat.

Very few beds, even MUCH higher end ones, come in one piece. Most are assembled on site, so I wouldn't say the fact that West Elm's require assemebly necessarily makes them structurally suspect.

I love the clean look of the second one (upholstered block headboard + wood platform bed). They have it in chocolate - very classy.

And yes, the first headboard does look like shredded wheat, LOL!

I actually love the first bed and headboard, and I like low beds, but this one seems a little TOO low. Does anyone know of a similar bed which is a little bit higher, or should I just get a carpenter to build an extension on the bottom?

I've been wanting to buy those little strands of shells (or whatever they are) hanging in the doorway of the top picture, but West Elm prices for those are just too high at $20 for a set of three strands. Considering you would need anywhere from 2-4 sets to cover a window or a doorway, that really adds up.

Anyone know where I can find these cheaper somewhere else?

I suppose one could always make their own, as well.

I have been seriously lusting after the metal canopy bed. It's a (significantly) cheaper than the Crate and Barrel version that I have lusted at even more seriously for over a year. I think buying like a pillow or even a lamp from west elm can be tricky--their stuff is so distinctincly west-elm- matchy-matchyish. But for major furniture, on a budget, I actually think they are pretty great.

On a bedroom-related but non-bed note...I'm in love with the low, 6 drawer version of the dresser in the topmost picture. Has anyone had any experience with this dresser, or any of WE's other drawer-bearing objects? I'm really worried about the quality of their stuff, and at $700 I'd expect a little better than Ikea particle board and plastic veneer waiting to explode the first time I try to put my sock collection in it (Damn your eyes, Aneboda dresser!). Any comments on stability?

likening that rope headboard to Shredded Wheat just made me actually want to buy it.

Has anyone bought the platform bed recently? I think this is the one where the slats would break.

Awesome, miss. Do it and have cereal dreams for nights to come!

I to buy the Morraco bed, so I went today to check it out in their store. When I got there and looked underneath the bed, BOTH support legs were broken and laying on the floor underneath. I'm really nervous to buy this bed now, but its one of the best looking options for that price range. Was this what caused the "collapsing bed" problem that you guys spoke of before??

Those are some very pretty platform beds....
