Best Products: Pentagram's Wall Calendar

2005_1_7_pent2.jpgMost wall calendars are reprehensible, overdone train wrecks of either bad art with nice calendar layouts, or good art with bad calendar layouts. We avoid them.

About three years ago, however, we stumbled upon one that was different: a typographic wall calendar designed by the Pentagram design group.

Each month is laid out in a different typeface (the bio of the typeface creator is included), and the beauty of it lies in how much is missing, not how much is there. It is elegant, simple and large.

Available in two sizes: Small 12"x18" ($20) and large 23"x33" ($35) from our AT Store, KenKnight.com or Shopcomposition.com.

as a lover of typeography i like this calendar. but i find it not that userfriendly. there is NO ROOM to write anything. sure it looks nice, but i thought one of the major points to a wall calendar was to beable to track appointments on it.

same goes for this calendar http://www.kenknight.com/kenknight-online/stwaca20.html i think i saw it at moma (it has even less space).

the best wall calendar i have seen was at a furniture store in soho. the basement level was half showroom and half officespace, i asked someone about it and they said they made them and printed it at a printshop.

I've always loved -- and used -- the Stendig calendar, but think the Pentagram calendar may even be nicer. Thanks for the tip.

What, WRITE on a Pentagram piece?!?! Sacrilege!!! ;)

Long been a Pentagram fan, even though I was underwhelmed by a project they did for our company a while back.

Yes, this is indeed better than the Stendig. I actually had one one year, and liked the cover so much, I kept it displayed that way. Form over function, baby!! ;)

But, sadly, not enough wall spac ein my new office for it. :(

louis w--
Actually, the large size is so big, there is plenty of room to write notes around the dates if so inclined.

Nice to see that the calendar has a shout out to Hoefler & Frere-Jones, who designed all twelve of the fonts on this year's calendar! H&FJ actually just published the fonts as a collection for $129, at Typography.com.
