Blogging Living, etc: August Issue

8-6-living3.jpg

8-6-living4.jpgReally good modern shelter porn. One of the perks of traveling is checking out foreign shelter magazines. Even though we'd heard about Living, etc, we had never really sat down and thumbed through it until last month when we went to Ireland. Boy, it's good...

We scanned a few images (pardon us!) just to give you a taste, of details we liked and went and got the links to two more chairs that we saw in the magazine that we also liked.

If you love modern homes, this is a really good place to look. A British production, they're Brit/Euro perspective is really really on target right now and the homes are cozy, artsy and striking.

8-6-living3.jpg

In this edition there is one home that's actually in Venice, CA, which has to be seen to be believed. Designed by architect Steven Ehrlich, this modern box opens up COMPLETELY to the outside. Homes like this really make us wish we lived in LA. We found the linkage to his home here.

A few chairs we liked:

Eames DSW Shell in white with dowel legs also available from Conran.

Eames DKR wire chairs with white bikin pads by Herman Miller from Vitra UK or .

it's a great mag.
it uts Dwell to shame... real modern design without the rehashing of MCM you get in the other.

I can't believe you never actually read it until now! It has been my design porn for at least three years now. I absolutely cannot live without Living Etc. Hold on to every issue. You will find it full of design inspiration, that you can revisit even two to three years from now. I'm saving copies for when I finally decorate my dream home.

Umm..I've been picking up a copy regularly from Border's Bookstore (San Diego). One of the recent issues included a free audio CD of nice chill-outmusic.

This has been my favorite magazine for years too. I pop down to the local Barnes and Noble every month to pick up my copy, since getting a subscription to it in the States costs more than the cover price which is just nuts!

Love this mag. I've been picking it up in NYC at various magazine shops for the past couple years.

This is my most favorite magazine in the whole wide world. I have torn pages with ideas taped to every part of my house like a crazy person.

It looks like a Martha Stewart - Dwell mash-up, with Martha coming out on top.

However, at least it does open up the appeal of modern design to a wider audience, if in a diluted form.

I love LivingEtc. too and would actually describe it as more of a Domino/Dwell mashup - lots of shopping and lifestyle articles like Domino, but with a more modern, less girly sensibility like Dwell. And although LivingEtc. is much more focused on interiors than architecture, I do like that they include floorplans with most of their features.

The only problem is not being able to buy most of the awesome furniture from the mag's UK sources!

"we had never really sat down and thumbed through it until last month"

I am absolutely obsessed with this magazine, and I keep every copy. I wait for it to show up at Borders every month, and my husband has quickly learned that "Living Etc. Time" is not to be disturbed. I'd get a subscription if it didn't cost so much (almost $140/year).

I have at least five years' worth of Living ETC's in my stash. It's the single design/decorating mag that I continue to buy and LOVE, month after month.
I agree, it puts Dwell (which I quit buying a year or two ago) to shame. A hundred times more interesting and accessible, plus it doesn't make me feel like a member of the have not club like Dwell does.

Agreed! LivingEtc Rocks. But . .. why the use of the phrase “modern shelter porn”? After all, this is AT, not CURBED.

preface, i love the mag of course--BUT, is it just me, or does their constant use of used mugs, wine glasses, etc. in *every* picture just make you want to tidy up? i know, it's a "lived in thing," or whatever, but i can't help but focus on the mess. perhaps that's just the compulsive in me...

Living Etc. is definitely fantastic but I think Inside Out from Australia might even be better. My order would be: Inside Out, Living Etc., Vogue Living Australia, Elle Decor UK, then Houses (also Australia). It's weird I subscribe and read Dwell every month but I've lost the excitement and anticipation of getting a new issue.

Since we don't have the big bookstores down in Soho/GV (or small ones anymore, sadly) I tend to pick it up at Universal News on Broadway & Broome. It's not hard to find at anyplace that sells international magazines.

How odd that you never read it until now, I pick it up at either B&N or Borders. I really prefer it to Dwell, which never really grabs me enough to acually want to purchase an issue. I also live near the house in question, so it's cool to get to see inside a bit too! One of the best things about LA is the extensin of ones space into the outdoors and vice versa.

I am a huge fan of Living etc. I am just sad that we are always one issue in arrears in Montreal. In one way this fact built up anticipation. I stop reading Dwell a couple years ago due to lack of interest; they lost their way.

If you are looking for modern architecture, take a look at the Dutch magazine Hauser; the main articles are translated in English. The British Grand Designs is another of my favorites but the distributor in Quebec stopped importing it.

Can't believe you haven't read it until now!!! You must not read the threads very often, because it has been blogged about over and over by many in the AT community claiming it is their favourite.

I've been getting it for years -- it surpassed UK Elle Decor some time ago (what the heck happened there???). Unfortunately, I am now missing 5 issues!!! I have been unable to find it in Switzerland, although I can occasionally get my hands on a UK Elle Decor. I am going to have to fork out for a subscription!

I used to get Vogue Australia Lving, and although they have had some good issues, they have never inspired me as much as the UK and Dutch/Belgian magazines. Thanks for the tip on Hauser. Will try to find online.

Okay, can anyone please explain to me why magazines in Europe are so OUTRAGEOUSLY EXPENSIVE??!!

I get North American magazines sent to me, and they cost more due to postage, but not much more. However, the cost of UK magazines delivered to mainland Europe is through the roof. It costs £162 for 2 years, which comes to about $346 Cdn; back home in Canada, I bought the same magazine (shipped from the UK) on the newsstand for $216 over the course of 2 years. Here in Switzerland, 1 issue at the newsstand costs the equivalent of $12 - $18 Cdn (depending on the magazine)!!!

If you like this magazine, you should check out Skona Hem
from Sweden, you might not understand it but sometimes a picture tells more then a 1000 words.
