Apartment Glossary

XLNT RR, FRPL - NW, TIK. If you've apartment hunted, you've probably encountered confusing abbreviations like this. Sometimes they take a moment to decipher.

The one above is an excellent railroad apartment with a non-working fireplace and tub in kitchen. We were delighted to find this handy online Apartment Glossary. It's made for NYU students seeking off-campus housing, but could be useful for any of us on the hunt. We wish we'd had it on hand when seeking our first apartment.

The glossary also provides simple explanations of common apartment terms like co-op, pre-war, post-war, and junior four.

I'll offer a reverse translation: In NYC, a "duplex" is, as the glossary says, a 2-story apartment. In Seattle (and maybe the whole west coast, I don't know), a "duplex" is a 2-unit building. This has caused me some confusion with both NYers and Seattlites.

Duplex as a two-unit building is also Canuck terminology. I used to live in a four-plex (two up, two down).
