05.24.rock1.jpgGranite retrieved from NYC construction sites is used by Adam Distenfeld of Brooklyn Rockwerks to create garden sculpture. We came across one of his works during a stroll around the neighborhood and wanted to know more.

Distenfeld's sculpture focuses on removing the centers from the large stones, lending lightness to the heavy objects.

As far as the salvage of the rocks is concerned, Distenfeld takes an industrious approach. During excavation, construction crews just see the rocks as obstacles so he negotiates to remove rocks from sites around the city. The rocks would generally be hauled off to landfills with other construction debris. We love that this wonderful, local sculpture reuses what is commonly wasted.
