Inspiration: Modern Landscaping book from 1964
Washington DC

We found this Sunset landscaping book at a thrift store this weekend and couldn’t believe how great some of the garden structure suggestions were. It’s becoming a marvelous resource for some new, dare we say, fresh ideas...

The use of lattice and translucent screens featured throughout the book look decidedly current and modern. We may need to find a way to incorporate some of these ideas into our garden. However, we think we'll pass on the suggested use of Asbestos-cement panels.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the older books on garden or decor. Some of it is way out there, and other stuff is as if it was made for today. I have a book that has the asbestos recommendation too, and it made me laugh...and then pause for thought...wondering what is currently touted as being "safe" for use will be something people 50 years from now will look back on and laugh at...because it turned out not to be so safe after all.

I like all the images you posted, and especially that comment that the asbestos-cement panels are especially good for children's areas. Oh dear!

yeah, ive picked a few of these books up at Thrift Stores too. I have a 1962 Sunset book titled, "furniture you can build". It has tons of really cool furniture ideas and includes an "Asbestos board" outdoor coffee table.

I design landscapes professionally, and when I first stumbled upon this book, I was amazed at how (I agree with your choice of word) "fresh" the ideas were when compared to most contemporary landscapes.

I love vintage design books too - the suggestions make todays mainstream "designs" look absolutely boring in comparison!
