They are gigantic and are taken in over the winter only to make their appearance again each summer. The perennials inspired us to try planting our own last summer, but we found that our south-facing windows just weren't the nurturing environment that our north-facing neighbors could provide their ferns. So, we'll just watch and wait until their moppy-headed creatures come back outside this summer, enjoying them from across the street.

Iâm pro plant voyeurism, but to avoid plant envy, just try different kinds of ferns. If your spot is sunny, try Christmas or Cinnamon; dappled shade, go for maidenhair or Japanese painted ferns, and for deep shade, plant Ghost Ferns. All are lovely.

I'm actually kind of devastated because the person in my building who owns 2 apartments on the 2nd floor right in the center of the building USED to always have flower boxes with lipstick geraniums and with ivy hanging down a couple of feet, which REALLY added to the curb appeal of the building, but this year the Dept. of Buildings (or some other agency) made her take them out and fined us for them, because they said they were dangerous.
Granted, there wasn't as deep a ledge as is pictured above, but they looked fantastic, and she had them anchored into the concrete ledge, so they were really secure.
I will miss those, because it warmed up the front of the building, and was just beautiful.
