The mug is the Volkswagen of the kitchen. Often cute instead of beautiful, they perform a service first and look good only occasionally. It's comfort design. We love mugs and keep buying them. In a perfect world, the AT Store would have a collection of mugs to die for, spanning the globe from cheap to expensive. This is our current fave...
Made by hand entirely of off-white ceramic, Daniel Smith's mugs are light, large, thin walled and lovely. They come in two sizes and two shades of natural colors. Made by hand and signed in the UK, we have found them only at Ochre. Oh, and don't get sticker shock. They're not cheap and definitely a splurge (@ $45 each for the large pictured!).
Fritz, I agree with you. I recently bought Teema and Cafe Press mugs and find myself reaching for the Cafe Press ones more often.
i think all your mugs should match. i found some really cheap & gorgeous mugs last year during the holiday sale at west elm.
they don't look very holiday to me. they are simple & white with little silver dots in a sort of deco pattern. it works with all of my steel.
I love having a variety of different mugs. My current fave is the "Dip Mug" from Crate & Barrel. It comes in a variety of colors, but this lovely green is my favorite. (It's a much springier green in person than it looks in the website photo). Link is in my name!
I wholeheartedly disagree that all of ones mugs should match.
As "comfort design" (well put by the way) one simply must have an arsenal from which to choose. How can the mug used for the morning coffee adequately handle an evening's tea, or when one wants a cup of soup reaching for the tall thin mug won't suffice.
I'm parial to a varried collection of mugs, some tall, some squat, some rustic, some sleek- all the same color but unique in their personalities.
I have a collection of more than 60 white mugs... each one unique. I love to drink coffe and café au lait from a mug, so I started picking them up until... well, all of you collectors out there know how it gets. I'm doing one wall in my kitchen in pegboard so that I'll have a place to show them off, and be able to find the one particular one that I want to use.
These are really nice ...
I have my favorite Fire King St. Denis mugs in ivory, but they're hard to find, so I also have some regular D handle Fire King mugs, and a few Japanese tea mugs. I tend to buy white and ivory glass, or more stoneware colors and textures of mugs. Overall, it's a nice contrast.
These are great. I love having a variety of mugs also. Every time I see a hand thrown mug I like at an art fair I pick one up. I have a great collection and guests enjoy picking out their favorite.
Nice mugs. I have recently amassed a small collection of mugs made by bloggers who do their logo the Cafe Press route. I enjoy these mugs they seem to take on a personality of their own and remind me of good memories in the morning when I have my coffee
This is my new favorite coffee mug:

They can be purchased at this website, but I picked mine up at the NY Historical Society museum gift shop.
