Hello AT,
I'm a big guy and I'm looking for a deep sofa that I can lie down on. I like clean lines and hate lots of throw pillows, so there's limited choices, particularly out here in the boonies (PA state capital area). I saw this discussion from last year on the subject of deep sofas.
Any updates? My own looking has found this Milo Baughman Thayer Coggin sofa, with a 26" SD. But the TC dealer in my town doesn't have a sample in stock. Any thoughts on the brand & model? Know of any dealers in the Mid-Atlantic region that have one on the floor that I could visit? ...

I get to NY, Philly, and Balt./Wash. occasionally, so traveling isn't a big deal.
I like the looks of the IKEA Kramfors, Tylosand, and Gotteborg but am worried about their quality.
I also have looked at a DEEP (43 inches!) sectional sold by Klaussner in their Distinctions line, called "Melrose Place." Can't find a picture online though. The configuration I've thought of, 2 corners and an armless chair in the middle, would do the trick as a sofa, but I can't find any independent information on the manufacturer. It's about $2K, so I'm hesitant to go that way unless I could get some idea of their quality.
Any guidance greatly appreciated, Dave
Dear Dave,
The Milo Baughman sofa from Thayer Coggin is a real nice one. We helped a client buy one just a few months back from Rico in Brooklyn, where they have a bunch of models on the floor. We would check them out there.
As for the others you mention, we would avoid the Ikea if you can afford it and hopefully someone else will know about the Klaussner you mention.
Anyone?
Just wanted to let you know that I shopped at BoConcept for the Zen 6000 sofabed in Center City Philadelphia. Service was very good. I too was skeptical after reading the reactions here so approached with caution. But they ordered the sofa for me in two days from a Jersey warehouse, helped me load it on a rental truck (since I wanted fast delivery) and when we screwed up the installation, replied with details in an e-mail within a few hours.
Minotti do some pretty deep sofas.
I tried minotti.com but it looks like a flash site which I can't get to at work so I found this instead:
http://www.europebynet.com/Detail_nn_sku_MNSFA004-2.html
It's expensive I know but they are the deepest, clean lined sofas I have seen.
BTW, do this in google

to find my posts on europebynet.
It's true that some of these Italian sofas are quite deep, however, they should not be purchased sight unseen from a web site because the comfort levels vary ENORMOUSLY. Some are 50/50-down soft, while others are as hard as bedrock. There are also some wonderful American examples of QUITE deep sofas....some that are so deep I can't even begin to reach the back when sitting upright. And...these sofas are available in a variety of price points. Check out my blog, Dave, and if you'd like to get some specifics send me an e-mail....
I shall say that Thayer-Coggin's sofa is rather shallow, if it's 26".
Hope to hear from you.

You should also try Bo Concept from Denmark - I just bought a great couch (the Diva line) from them which is deep enough to slip into but not sloppy looking. I added a chaise to the end and it is the best of both worlds. Good construction (wood frame, not fiberboard, proper springs and a soft wool weave) - you can find them at
Let's see if this works again...trying to link

And they're on sale!
(but if not, it's www.boconcept.us)
Despite being a shortie, I like a deep sofa to nap on (it's also much appreciated by all my extremely tall friends). I recently purchased the Prado from Crate & Barrel, which happens to have been on sale, and is a medium size lengthwise, helpful if you're in cramped quarters like my studio. It's no DWR, but the look is streamlined, slightly off the floor, and I'm sure you'll be able to find it where you live. Good luck with the search! :)
I have the perfect sofa!
I bought a beautiful custom sofa from a local Santa Monica designer called Viesso (previously called Vesari).
Viesso
Palomino Strata
(this photo makes the arms look a bit odd, but the impression is very different in person)
Here are a cuople cameraphone shots from when I first bought the sofa. (it was the first piece of furniture I bought for my new house)

The line I picked was called Palomino Strata. It's very clean, simple and angular, but unbelievably comfortable, and quite deep. Since it was a custom, it was HIGHLY configurable. I got a one-arm sofa and chaise and adjusted the chaise depth and leg height to my own specs.
The arms are 16" wide and padded with firm foam. They are suitable for sitting or placing a book or laptop. I bought 1' square shets of slate and set them on each arm to act as multiple-drink coasters.
Since Viesso/Vesari are still fairly new, the prices are MORE than reasonable.
Best of luck with the hunt!
Well, the links didn't work...
Hey Apartment Therapy! It'd be helpful if you had some instructions as to what HTML you do and don't allow in comments!

How much is that sofa in the picture please? Thanks.
I love love love deep streamlined sofas. When I had temporary digs and needed a couch I bought the BEDDINGE sofa bed from IKEA. I loved it, super deep and wide and comfy. For a while anyway....the foam got softer and softer as I owned it and after two years it was still comfy but significantly cushier so I don't know how long it would last for.
Then I bought an apartment and decided to buy a real grownup couch. My husband wanted leather so we looked at the Kramfors---jeez was it uncomfortable. And all the other Ikea couches were made out of the same foam as the Beddinge so I think after a few years its going to feel much cushier......
We decided on the Chelsea sectional couch from Room and Board and god do I love it! Its deep, super streamlined and has a lot of sprawling/napping options. I have been having some high quality sofa napping of late. I just got it a month ago so I don't know how well it will hold up but it better because it was expensive. I have heard generally good things about thier sofas though and I don't have any kids to wreck it so I'm not worried.
ligne rosete.
I have the Nomad and it's DEEP. Without the pillows it doubles as a twin bed. I'm just under 6 feet and I can lay down with plenty of room to spare.
Excelent quality too.
We just bought the Milo Baughman Thayer Coggin sofa and love it. It's incredibly comfortable and well-made. Rico in Brooklyn is definitely worth a visit as they have a couple Thayer Coggin sofas on display.
The down-filled "Lightpiece" by Flexform warrants your consideration. I can't seem to stay awake when I'm sitting in it!

Thank you to everyone for their comments so far! I'm looking forward to checking out some leads and look forward to getting some more. I wanted to give a bit of feedback.
Maxwell & Sylvia: Thank you. I'll visit Rico when I'm in town.
Tim: I'll email later. I'm a beginning furniture buyer, so there are probably lots of options I'm not aware of.
Jamie: the Minotti stuff you link to, while cool-looking, is beyond my minor bureaucrat budget. I am looking to buy a good quality item that I'll love and will last, but a $5-7K sofa is beyond me. $2K-3K is more my limit. And if something awesome came along for $1,500, that wouldn't be a bad thing either 8-]
Sarah: I did see the Chelsea at Room & Board. It's a bit on the shallower side (24" SD, tight back). That might be less of an issue if I get a chaise, where some of my excess shoulderage might go, but I'd prefer something in the form of a sofa-sofa as opposed to a sofa-chaise-sectional.
Jim in Holland, Laura, Julian: I'll check out Crate & Barrel, Ligne Rosete, and BoConcept next time I'm in Philly or NYC. I'm wary of BoConcept given the number of angry customers who post here, but I have an open mind and take anonymous criticism with a grain of salt.
Jason Carlin: Viesso seems like a great idea! Unfortunately, the newness of the business and the $500 cross-country shipping fee are negatives.
Again, thanks to everybody who has responded!
I am 6'6" and we went with this model from
http://mitchellgold.com/clifton.asp
Mitchell Gold Clifton
oh...saw that you are not into sectionals
the clifton also comes in a regular sofa
you also may want to look at the jasper at Room and Board.
Both of these are in the 2 to 3 grand range
Crate & Barrel makes a few mid-century modern sofas that are 42" deep. They just retired the Teddy line, which were as good as beds. Several other similar permutations took its place, in different fabrics. I've been pleased with my C&B furniture, and they are having their annual furniture sale now. Also, if you go onto their website, go under clearance as they occasionally have some good stuff in there.
Is the Crate & Barrel sale still going on?
Does anyone have any experience with an Avery Boardman sofabed? It is pricey and I think the mechanism is the same as any sofabed.

If you'd like a leather sofa, that I personally love. Ikea has a nice comparatively inexpensive leather kramfors sofa that looks great. I got my a couple months ago and think its great. I have dogs and their nails don't even scratch it it holds up great

If you are in town in New York City, do visit ABC carpet as they have a nice modern seating section. Also, definitely look into Design Within Reach as they are very reasonablly priced source. They may have a showroom in areas closer to you. website: www.dwr.com
The Melrose Place by Klaussner is wonderful. It is the kind of sofa that you fall into. You can purchase it through a Klaussner dealer. I know that Sofa Express carries it as a floor model. I am in the process of ordering it, now. I am trying to decide on the fabric choices. Try looking up a dealer in your area at the Klaussner website. Even if the dealer doesn't have the Melrose Place in store, they could order it for you.
It is expensive, in my opinion. But I have looked for a more resonably priced sectional for a year and I can't find anything that compares to the comfort.
Laura - how much did you pay for the Prado at C&B when it was on sale? What sale was this? I am about to purchase this sofa for $899...
I am wondering if anyone can tell me a bit about the quality of construction done by Room and Board? I am looking at the Cameron Sofa and can't find details..thanks!
Sus
I recently order the Melrose Place sectional (5 pieces: 3 corners, sofa, and chair) because I like the clean lines, it is very stylish and to my taste, plus my husband loves the deepness of it. It is very rare the we agree on something. This sectional has the style and functionality that meets both of our needs. It was a bit expensive, $5000 at some dealers, but, we purchsed from a place that gave us a huge discount. For all 5 pieces we only paid $2100. We live in NC (Furniture capital) and Klaussner's furniture factory is right here in NC too so we usually get pretty good prices here in state. We bought it from a company who gives big discounts because of that and they ship out of state too, I believe. They are called Carolina Sofa Company. Here is their web address
www.carolinasofa.com/
The sofa was special ordered and takes about 4 weeks to arrive. It should be here in 2 more days. If I remember, I will update the site again and let you know more about the quality and comfort of the sofa.
I'm just about to buy a Melrose Place from Sofa Express (Klaussner owns them) How is it standing up? Do you still love it? This was BY FAR the most comfortable sectional we tried and is a perfect fit -- around $3G so not super high, but still no chump change -- but if it lasts it'll be worth every penny....I hope.... so whaddaya think?
This is Relly responding again. We received the Melrose Place sectional back in mid-December. We love it!!!! It is super comfy, sturdy, and stylish. I ordered it in a velvet-like microfiber, it came with lots of gorgeous throw pillows, some round and some square, and it is just beautiful. I swear, it is large enough to seat about 10 people and it sits very deep. My husband says it is almost as deep as a twin mattress. We get compliments from everyone who sees it. I can't stress how comfortable and plush it is. It has become my favorite place to curl up and fall asleep. I'm glad we selected this sectional. We made a wise choice.
