House & Home Roundup: 10.6.05

10-11-flipping.jpgAhhhhhh, H&H is back and hitting its stride with the latest edition last week. Though it's hard to say which story we liked best, the one that stuck in our mind was Flipping With a Twist: The Camera-Ready Cottage, by Joyce Wadler. The story? Two guys, Blair Gordon and John Alvarado find the most woebegone fixer-uppers in Key West and the Hamptons and fix them up the way they would like them to be if they were to live in them. The result? Really, really beautiful, with none of the typical developer, flipper feeling. The print version - unfortunately - has better pics....

  • Only The Frame is Familiar: Is computer art ready for its closeup? Probably not, but in Steven Sacks house and at his gallery, Bitforms, it's getting real close.

  • Where Eden Could Order Its Plants: Another two guy show, but this takes place in the Northwest where Daniel Hinkley and Robert Jones founded Heronswood Nursery in 1987. Due to the remarkably tolerant climate in the Puget Sound area, they have been able to collect, grow and sell an amazing collection of plants from all over the world. Their horticultural influence is spreading.

  • Light for Less Than $101: Another great roundup from Ms. Rohrlich: 9 lamps from places such as Target, Bo Concept, Ikea and Y Lighting.

  • All Day Long, He'd Yidle Didle Shop: Part of the "shopping with" series, this one tracks around town with Harvey Fierstein, currently starring in "Fiddler on The Roof". He really likes kitschy ballerina lamps. ;-)

That twig bench reminds me of the Alder Cube designed by Brent Comber, who showed at the last ICFF. Available at The Conran Shop. My name links to the item.

I would have to say that 100% Design looked 90% Boring and 10% "Maybe Interesting". Nothing really stood out as "worth the trip across the pond."

    Cheers..... Annie
