apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

House & Home Roundup: 7.6 pts

Perhaps in preparation for Domino magazine's arrival next month, H&H steps up the focus on the shopping impulse and provides a rollicking account of a search for chandeliers.

With commentary from Apartment Therapy (we are totally flattered), Rick Marin obsesses over being a straight man in what he believes to be a gay man's world. Hello! We're all capable of swingin' baby.

This is a good edition, very helpful, and kudos go to Marianne Rohrlich's colorful rundown on summer carpets in Personal Shopper.

But wait, he STARTED with sperm-shaped pendants? I think he may have been dabbling in "chandelier world" already. ;)

This should also prove a helpful story (and stellar advice from MGR) for Richard, who posted recently, looking for a "chandelier event."

And I LOVE the chandelier the writer mentions from Moss... the line of traditional crystals hung off one length of stainless steel tubing. It's a favorite knock-off item on design tv.

Just saw an episode of Divine Design where she positioned an arcing, large-scale floor lamp near/over a dining table, which I thought was a really clever way to avoid the whole wiring issue.

Debbie Travis had a really great idea on Facelift, where she encircled a traditional but mostly vertical chandelier with semi-transparent silvered film, in a cylinder. Only a few crystals showed through the bottom, the rest "ghosted" through the tube, and the effect was really stunning.

And Kenneth Brown just sang the praises of Capiz shell "ceiling jewlery" on his most recent reDesign, which West Elm apparently agrees with.

It's chandelier MANIA, I tell ya!! And you heard it from MGR FIRST!!

I'm a big fan of the dorm staple chinese paper lanterns... In another rental house my roommates and I hung two white paper lamps over our large dining room table. The walls were wood panelled, and the lamps looked fantastically 70's retro.

But our really aggravating landlord made us take them down - said they were fire hazards. Ack.

Right now I have three ivory, natural paper lanterns staggered over my bed against a chocolate plum wall, and they're hooked up to a dimmer. The cords are a pain to deal with, but if you're in a rental, they're usually the closest to a chandelier you're gonna get.

i have a question- in the "toddler proof and party perfect" slideshow, the kitchen slide, the caption calls the floors "blue washed." what is that? where does it come from? does anybody know? thanks in advance!

seema--
My guess would be the wood floors were washed with a thinned down blue paint/glaze (which may have been rubbed off slightly while still wet, givne how much grain shows through), or finished with a (blue) tinted stain.
Just a guess tho, as I don't think the term as used is hardcore technique terminology.

faith--
am loving the color/idea of "chocolate plum."

I loved the whole context of the chandelier article of "I'm really into chandeliers, does that make me gay?" thing. Good going, Max, on setting him straight. It's all just a continuum.

I love that chandelier at Moss too but everytime I see it, I think "shouldn't that be fairly easy to make?" I'm glad to hear that yes, yes it is and people have done it.

Seema, I think (think) that by blue washing, they meant that they put a blue tinted stain on a wood floor. If you look at it, it has a slight bluish look to it. You know, I usually don't like seriously modern apts that have nothing in them, but I really loved that apt. I think that huge, incredibly bright painting really did it for me. Just cool, cool, cool.

thanks otherpatrick and ruth! that's kinda what i figured. i think it looks really nice and would be prefect for a beach house i'm working on at the moment!

A beach house!?!? Hey, if you need any second opinions, you KNOW I am always happy to provide them (and third opinions, and fourth opinions, and... !)

I have a number of "fantasy interiors" I carry with me in my head all the time... an all-white-except for art stark modern thing, an updated Federalist thing in DC, a sophisticated country thing, a Santa Fe house, a swank NY penthouse, etc.... and "beach house" is one of 'em!

re-- does this chandelier make me look gay?

too funny! A gay stand-up comedian did this thing where, after she revealed to the audience she was gay, she said "Hey, look at all the people who just stopped laughing, saying 'hey, if she's gay, and I'm laughing, doesn't that make ME gay?'"
After a brief glance around the nervous audience, she said, "YES, yes it does." just to prove how ridiculous we all are.

oh otherpatrick, you misunderstand! i only WISH it were MY beach house! alas, it is not. sigh.
