apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

NYT: Asian Antiquities in a Chelsea Loft

The extravagant Chelsea loft of Thomas Hays and Marlene Wallace highlights the travels and bank account of investment-banker-turned-designer Mr. Hays. The furnishings are a melting pot of exotic locales: Thailand, China, India, Morocco, Italy, Afghanistan, France, Spain, and Tibet. Specializing in antiquities, the designer is open about the costs of his possessions and Kings' Riches in a Chelsea Domain offers a glimpse into a bizarre home where the furnishings seem to out-value the 2,800-square-foot apartment...

Although it's a loft space, after extensive renovation it's very odd to see exposed pipes above a carpet allegedly from the Forbidden City, no? While the apartment is not our style, the roof deck is amazing (last pic) and the integration of large-scale plants and trees is nice to see when one has access to skylights and 20' ceilings.

It's so nice to see people who actually live with "things".

Absolutely GORGEOUS!!! It's relaxed, elegant and eclectic, I feel like I could take my shoes off and curl up on the sofa.

Very beautiful and posh. It's interesting that the designers left the ethnic style behind when they did the kitchen. I wonder what that's about?

The home looks good but what's really interesting about the article was the writer's ill-disguised distaste for the owner.

To me, it looks like the result of a shopping spree at Cost Plus and Pier One Imports... or maybe I'm simply expressing my envy of his global travel adventures.
