The East 82nd Street apartment recently renovated by Michael Haverland and Philip Galanes was their third renovation in twelve years. When purchased, this newest space was sparse with details. With their experience, a cool confidence is now reflected in the new period details (paneling and mantles purchased from salvage shops) and modern flourishes...

One of our favorite elements of this home is the gridded latticework designed by Mr. Haverland, an architect. It adds a rich texture to many of the apartment's walls and is an especially elegant detail when it's combined with the Cole & Son wallpaper. There are pictures from the couple's previous projects included in the story: Starting Over, and Over, and Over.

I love the look of this apartment! I really like the shape of the bay window in the living room. Nice job!

What a schizophrenic mess. Why don't they just go ahead and lay down a tape boundary in the middle of that living room. One side can be modern, the other can be stuffy old money New Yorker.

From reading the NYT article, I can see that this pair has very forward-thinking taste. Right now I don't like their apartment at all, but I'll bet in 10 years I'll love it.

Love the white on white grid pattern of mouldings, but not so crazy about the grid over the wallpaper. Actually, I don't care for the wallpaper on its own. The quirky blend of old and new is well done, and something that really appeals to me.

I like everything except the wallpaper a lot, and I bet it's a lovely light space to live in. Reading the article it sounds like they've worked to combine two different tastes in interiors, and I can respect that. I also think the refitting of the period features is great.
But I can't help just a little envy and resentment at all these people in magazines and NYT articles who trade in one million dollar apartment for another every few years, make it fabulous and move on, having bought and sold at just the right time. It's so far from my life and they make it seem so easy.

Love it all.

I love it, I find it very light and clean and airy and I love the mix of elements. And I adore the wallpaper!
The only thing that bugs me is that to my eye, the visual weights of the fireplace and red-square paintings makes the chairs seem weirdly miniature. The rooster, too, seems too big for the chairs. But maybe that's just me.

I don't think I could possibly hate that lamp on the desk more.

No guts, no glory!
Michael and Philip, I hope you take the barrage of negative comments with a grain of salt. There's lots of us out here in AT land that LOVE what you're doing. Your style is personal and fun and I think you've got great taste, not to mention guts!

It's fabulous. It's the kind of place I'd walk into for a cocktail party and spend all evening just absorbing the eclecticism, flair, and artistry until I realized I was neglecting to mingle like a good guest is supposed to! I can see why a lot of people on here would think this is one big ol' mess; but they've just watched too much HGTV. (Love the window and the salon-style art display.)

Thank you for letting us see your apartment. Beautiful and refined are two words that come to mind. I loved that it was nothing I had seen before, I had to really look to get it. Our house tour was shown the same week, so I felt we were in good company. Thanks again, K&G

Splendid! A melange of art, culture, travel, history...in the end resulting in beautiful harmony. These images reveal the aesthetic and mood that I only hope my hard work, open eyes, and bargain shopping (!!!) can create in my own home. Every single thing is considered! Wow. Michael and Philip definitely have the admiration of this young textile designer.

This could be an ELLE Decor layout...and I mean it in a complimentary way. It is a very different aesthetic, and the owners are fearless....also have the confidence to pull it off! It's a lot to take in, and I know that I would be afraid to mix some of the elements. The owners are pushing the boundaries a little, and like a previous poster said, in 10 years most people would probably like it....right now it's gutsy!
