Ikea Grundtal: The Stylish King of Cheap Kitchen Shelving
Email from 2.17.08

G R U N D T A L. Yiming is currently in our Small Cool Contest and this is her kitchen. Painted gloss black wall with gleaming modern stainless shelving popping off of it. It's totally high style. You should check out her whole place here. The shelving is a great, great IKEA design and about as cheap as you can get. It's called GRUNDTAL and was designed for Ikea by Mikael Warnhammar....

This is a workhorse that's been around for years, but it's definitely one of Ikea's best designs in terms of style and efficiency. The entire collection has 35 pieces, but these stainless shelves are the backbone. They are useful in kitchen, bathroom, garage and even outdoors. The stainless, while not of the highest grade, is pretty darn good and will look good a long time.

More pieces in the collection from Not Martha

We've used this countless time with clients and at home. If you want to do open shelving with a slightly industrial look. This is the way to go.

Best,

Cheap and industrial strength sturdy too, which should give some of the knee-jerk IKEA haters around here pause.

I love the way Yiming set it off against the jet black.

I love open shelving but I must say -- having had some in my previous kitchen -- that things tend to get covered with a film of cooking miasma (a little olive oil/a little essence of vegetable soup/whatever), to which dust clings tenaciously. Do people wash everything on all their open shelves every week? Who has the time for that?

This stuff is a great value - Long lasting, versatile and worth more than the price paid.

(It's in the Kitchen Section, Bethany)

As someone who moves a lot and rents this system is amazing. its so easy to put up in any kitchen or bathroom depending on where you need it.

Deborah, I do have to clean it a lot, but I find anything I put in my kitchen has to be cleaned constantly despite what its made of

I looked in "kitchen storage" and "food and dining" and I guess they were out of stock... I only make an ikea trip once every couple of years (I dont drive so its a bigger deal) so I guess I missed out on this one.

But the solid shelves aren't metal. They're fiberboard with a covering.

Don't look for them near the little kitchen stuff - they are usually near the kitchen cabinet section.

Ok, IKEA in Burbank... are these upstairs in the showroom area or downstairs?? I've NEVER been able to find ANY of these, in either area.

"But the solid shelves aren't metal. They're fiberboard with a covering."

What you're referring to isn't Grundtal -
That's Mossby (intended to be used w/ the Bjarnum brackets)
