We've been puzzling for months now about how were going to store wine in our new apartment. Floorspace is at a minimum, but we do have some usable wallspace. That said, we didn't want bottles sticking OFF our walls. Over the weekend we spotted this really nice design at Caffe Falai and tracked down the origins...
Actually, within 15 minutes on Google, Sara Kate had tracked these down (she's GOOD) and discovered that Falai had painted theirs white.
VintageView wine racks come from an English company named VintageView, but are available in the US through Wine Master Cellars: www.winemastercellars.com. They are are great design with two simple, adjustable tracks that allow you to store bottles snug to the wall and show off your labels. They are expandable, come in two-deep designs and are NOT expensive. We're going to get a set, install it, paint it white and then we'll show you the results.

if you use this system, you better drink that wine very quickly. exposing your vino to light and and any source of heat will spoil it. i learned this the hard way.

Have you been to bar veloce? they used to have a nice wall system too, where the bottles balanced off a pole type thing on the wall, flush against wall, not sticking out...at the east village location

Attractive but not a good way to store wine, make sure you drink these bottles quickly.

About storage, what is the most important is not to have direct sunlight or a heat source close by your wines. Light do alter the bottles over time but a bottle can go bad even in the better storage conditions. Frankly, it depends on how long you want to keep your bottles.
Not to disappoint many but I see a lot of wine fridges, even high end, sold with clear glasses. I am not sure it is any better. As a matter of fact, the wine fridge mostly keeps your wine at the right temperature. If you are living in a small space, you cannot build a proper wine cellar. Going vertical on your walls seems to me like a sensitive option.

Keep those racks out of direct sunlight and any heat sources and they will be fine for storing wine for a good amount of time. If you are a serious collector who will be holding onto vintages for very long periods you will want to keep your wines in a cool dark place. If you will be holding onto a bottle of wine for a day or a month or a year or even a few years these racks will be fine.
These racks are an excellent solution for storage space in small apartments, plus they look great and you see all your wine labels, kind of like a mini wine label art gallery.
