I am so excited to share my new FLOR rug with AT! I was an early adapter when it came to FLOR. After two moves, almost six years and a hot-tempered chihuahua puppy, my first FLOR purchase had seen better days. I'm sending our old, abused FLOR back to Interface to be recycled. After searching for a replacement area rug, we decided on FLOR again. It's inexpensive, easy to take care of and the company is environmentally progressive...
We chose FLOR's Fedora tile in Chartreuse. The felt-like surface is one of the softest, and the super-thin tile is made of 80% recycled material. An extremely low-pile in rug speak, it would be easy to keep clean with a canister vacuum. Fedora is sold by CB2 and it was easy to pick up twelve tiles at the Manhattan store. At only $7 a tile, Fedora is FLOR's least expensive tile!
After pulling up the old tiles, we cleaned and vacuumed the floor. Our rental's hardwood floors are seriously damaged and uneven, so we were instantly reminded of why we needed a rug...

When, laying out the tiles, I used the strips of hardwood as a guide to keep the rug straight.

FLOR has abandoned the original rubber-cement-like stickers that kept the carpet stuck to the ground. Now, the company uses these larger adhesive stickers to stick the carpet tiles to other carpet tiles, without damaging the floor. A welcome improvement.

The seams are nearly invisible.

I love our new FLOR!

Looks great!
But I'm curious to hear how your Fedora tiles hold up. I purchased the Oatmeal about 6 months ago and could not be more disappointed. Within 2-3 months my tiles began to pill like crazy and now they look awful. It's just me in my apartment too so they don't get heavy use. Has anyone else had similar issues?
I hope you have better luck Aaron!

Gina, good to know about the Fedora tiles. i was just going to place an order for them today. I did speak to someone at Flor yesterday & they said that they were having issues with the vendor that makes these tiles for them. Perhaps this is the issue?
Has anyone had any experience with the Solid Ground group? that was our 2nd choice...

I used fedora wall-to-wall in my entire basement (big family room and guest room) and it looks great. I did notice it started pilling, though, in the area where I exercise.
I'm hoping to order some of the "heavy traffic" stuff for stair treads.

Where are those cubes from?

We also used Fedora, and it was the worst waste of money. We did an 8x8 area, and it looked awful after the first week. The pilling is awful, and lord help you if you walk on it occasionally. We decided to buy a rug for that area, and although we were greatly disappointed with it, I did call Flor and ask for return boxes to recycle it (not to try to get a refund), and they guy said he would send them out, and they never came. That was our bad experience with Flor. As a side note, when they say not to be used on waxed hardwood, PLEASE be sure you don't have ANY wax (or any coating on it for that matter) on it. Those glue dots came up and pulled the varnish off with it.

Inexpensive??? I guess that's a matter of opinion but I did not think they were affordable.

NathanSE: the cubes were purchased many years ago at a Dune sale. They still sell them and they almost always have some available at their annual floor model sale.
1971MI: As I mentioned in my post, FLOR no longer uses the glue dots.
denver digs: under $100 for a nearly 5x8' area rug is a good deal.
i hope ours don't pill! It's in an area of the room where there is not a lot of foot traffic, so maybe they will be ok.

I purchased 4 boxes of FLOR tiles a couple months ago for a similar area rug. I was, and continue to be, horribly disappointed in them. They pilled, continuously look dingy and I'm having a terrible time with them pulling apart from even the lightest use. I hope this rug works well for you, but I'm, sadly, skeptical of FLOR now. And, it's too bad, because i was so excited about everything the company is about.
Also, did i understand that correct? you can contact FLOR directly and they'll send you boxes to return/recycle old tiles?

I have Fedora tiles under my desk in an area that sees a lot of rolling chair action. They have not started to pill at all. They do however attract every inch of cat hair within a two feet radius. I vaccuum regularly and they still look great. Totally worth it for the cost. And yes, they are incredibly cheap. I looked forever for rugs and this was the cheapest option I found short of buying a used one at a thirft store.

Ok, I'm going to out FLOR as well. I contacted FLOR a couple of days ago to ask if they ever donate remainders or rugs sent back for recycling to non profits. My son's public school needs a rug for one of their classes. The woman who answered the customer service line was borderline rude, answering every question I asked with, "We don't ever give the product away for free". While I do not necessarily expect them to donate their product, the response was pretty unpleasant. I was thinking that with their reputation of conscientiousness they would be a little more forthcoming, but evidently not.

For someone like me, with a Chihuahua that loves to tear up expensive rugs, these FLOR tiles are a godsend. I also like being able to have a rug that fits the exact area I need it to.

I have 2 Flor rugs that I received about 8 months ago. The dining room is Twiggy, which looks beautiful, but doesn't get much traffic and the family room is a combination of Solid Ground and Sprout. It has held up beautifully and gets quite a bit of traffic, especially from my cat. The cat is the main reason why I started to look at Flor rugs, because he will tear up anything with loops, but he hasn't managed to make a mark on the Flor rugs (and it's not for lack or trying). Like mattab said, it's a "godsend".

We had the FLOR "Toy Poodle" line in Citron, and got rid of it after about a year -- the tiles just looked so cheap and grungy and gross, no matter how often we washed them (which, given the number of tiles we had, was no easy task).
Maybe the darker colors are better?

I have Flor morning Coffee Latte. I love the tiles and after living with a few of them over a year I have 2 thoughts. First, if you own pets there is no better product. We have two ancient cats that never find the cat box, and an incontinent doggie. We have spent hundreds of dollars on rugs from Crate and Barrel, West Elm, and Lowes. All of the rugs were nice, but after a month or 2 with our animals they were done. After investing in Flor tiles the first thing we realized is if a pet has an accident you can pull up that tile, wash it right in the sink, let it dry and its good to go. No lingering pee in the backing or chemical spray fumes. But they are really expensive. The average tile cost 10 dollars. A 5x8 rug requires 17 tiles. Thatâs on average 170 dollars. And if you go with a higher quality tile, prices can get in to the 15-20 dollar range. In the end, the tiles are priceless worth ever hard earned penny, and I wish we had just went right to them, but Iâm a believer and would recommend them to all people that have pets or kids.

We just picked up 2 boxes of FLOR tiles from Target for the low low price of 40 bucks.... or $3 a tile!!!!
You don't have the same ability to chose, but in basic neutrals there's no reason not to pick them up!
Don't forget to check next time you are out!

I have dogs and teenagers and my foyer/hallway Fedora rug has held up well so far (4 months and counting)
I will definitely be buying more tiles from Flor.

I have had a 11.5x7 FLOR rug in Fedora in Oatmeal, Charcoal and Chartreuse for about 9 months. The rug attracts up a lot cats hair, but it is easily vacuumed off. I have already spilled a few things (tomato sauce and red wine) on the tiles, but I can easily pull it up and rinse it off in the sink and let it drip dry in the shower. So far this has been a great investment. Cleans easily and very affordable!

My question is: how plush and nice are they to barefeet? I have yucky berber in my apartment and would love something more soft and cushy to walk on....I'm assuming the more expensive ones might be more plush? And is it really true you can buy these at Target?!?!

I gotta know--where did you get that bookshelf thing behind the lamp? I love that!

I'm looking to reupholster a club chair and I love the fabric that you used on your chair in the photo. Any idea on the brand and name of the pattern? Thanks.
view andrewg's profile
Geri: I wouldn't refer to Fedora as "plush" as it is very very thin. It is very very soft (and fuzzy) though.
donnafergie: The bookshelf/cabinet is BONDE from IKEA.
andrewg: the Recliner is from DWR and upholstered in a Maraham fabric in Morel. (they still sell the chair with this option)

I have Toy Poodle in black (which is actually a very dark muted brown) installed wall to wall and so far am very pleased. Its been in for about 6 months and I haven't had any pilling or other problems. I looked at the felt-y types (fedora, solid ground) when I was choosing but they looked like they would be dust magnets.
I do need to make some extra effort when vacuuming and use the attachment hose to clean out the bevel grooves between tiles.
On a side note, Flor is NOT cheap. On a per square foot basis, the good stuff is significantly more than comparable installed carpeting. And thats not counting the shipping charges which can add a considerable chunk of change. If you are looking to carpet and save money, price out carpeting at your local home improvement or flooring store and compare.
The only reason I went with Flor over installed carpeting is that my building keeps springing leaks. It was just way cheaper to clean/replace a couple of tiles than to keep replacing mildewing carpet and padding. If I hadn't had this problem, I would have gone with conventional carpet.
