Look! Annual Holiday Cards - The Best Art

2005_2_23_lookcards.jpg
Dept. of Creativity. This past weekend we went up to Vermont to stay with friends who have been going up to the same house since they were born. On the walls are carefully hung every holiday card their parents had recieved from their friend Richard Ellis over more than a twenty year stretch. These small framed cards are all over the house.

Ellis (a pro artist in real life) did these on the side and sent them out as gifts to his friends, not expecting them to have such a long life. Each one is impeccably drawn and dated, starting in the 60's and running up through the early 80's.

Whether you are a pro or not, an annual card is a great opportunity to work with one theme, send out a small piece of original art and let your friends collect it. (Thanks, J & J!) MGR

A poet and artist (and mentor) friend of mine, Alan Chong Lau seems to do this too. He sends them out during the Lunar New Year, though (last year, it was a monkey, this, a rooster). You can check him out at sedersgallery.com

Joining a great tradition of designer holiday cards, including the prolific Charles and Rae Eames and I believe the late Mark Hampton.
