apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Look! Arresting Design from 1965

Noodling around over the weekend, we clicked into YouTube and became mesmerized by a clip from The Beatles 1965 film by Richard Lester, Help!. The song featured is "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away," and in addition to the song and the sight of a really young set of Beatles, the interior design and the color is awesome.

Check out the mix of traditional and mid-century modern (then brand new). This is so old, it's new again.

I totally wanted that sunken-pit thing in the floor as soon as I saw this movie, many years ago.

Yes, I've Jonesed (sp) for this apartment since I saw this movie as a kid. Weren't there four sunken living rooms (there are four doors in four separate, false, fronts that all lead to the same apartment)?

I think only John had the sunken bedroom, I believe George had a carped made of real grass. I have a bright yellow promo poster of this movie on my wall, and it includes the teaser "Will John live to sleep in his pit again?", I thought that was awesome. Clashes like crazy with the walls though.

Yes! I completely forgot about this ... I was so obsessed with this apartment when I was in high school. My best friend and I used to argue over who had the best part of the place ... I liked John's because of the sunken pit. She liked Ringo's because he had a sandwich machine. Paul had a piano or organ or something that came up out of the basement.
