Look! Dark Aubergine Color on the Ceiling

10-3-trattoria.jpg
Spotted last night at Grano Trattoria: a really neat use of dark color on a ceiling. This great little restaurant recently underwent a decor change, and it's looking a bit more upscale right now, but the chef and the vibe is still laid back and friendly. Keeping their walls a light, warm color, they painted the drop ceiling a dark, warm color, which brings it down but not oppressively. Because there is a great deal of lighting on the walls and the ceiling has reveals on both sides, the overall effect is cozy.

great little restaurant, really cute, good food and moderate prices.

it makes me laugh because i remember the first time i went there and asked for a bit of fresh parmagian cheese with my meal, a dish that included fresh scallops, and the server refused my request on the principle that fish should never be accompanied by cheese. i happily complied but the situation became overly involved, with the chef coming out to see what i didn't like about the dish. i wish i could have crawled under the table and looked up at that aubergine ceiling, culinary lesson learned.

cafe asean is another good one in that area, right across from granno trattoria.

Christina, you fish and cheese heathen!!! ;)
Ask for parmesan on the side for your salad and add it to whatever you want. :)

I love getting color/interior inspiration from semi-unlikely sources, such as this restaurant.

And Aubergine is on my top five list of deep interior colors, even in its Americanized incarnation of "Eggplant". Reminds me of the line from Steel Magnolias" "Is that a grape, or an aubergine?" flawlessly drawled by Olympia Dukakis in the movie, when she misinterprets what providing "color commentary" at a sporting event means... Frankly, I prefer her intepretation.

Another great source for gutsy color usage is your local neighborhood Starbucks (any one of the hundreds!), which also has been doing deep, dark ceilings to great effect.

My humble opinion only, but I'm no fan of all this aubergine. Its all of the sudden everywhere. To me it looks like barney has gone to the dark side. Does anyone else feel this way? This would be one of the last colors I would want in my home. I feel like it is one of this 'very now' things that we will all be regretting 5 years from now. Unless you're a vampire, I say pass.

A beautiful color is a beautiful color, any time.

But a beautiful color is only beautiful if you find it so.

(and a real aubergine is hardly Barney-esque...)

I thought I was the only one who would admit that he liked things about the looks of Starbucks.

While we're on it, I think it's interesting how they manage to maintain a fairly consistent feel regardless of how new or old of a building they put themselves in, and yet how each one is slightly different.
