Look! Holly's Easter Egg Bathroom

5-11-holly-top.jpgGreetings to Holly in Yorkville, who sent in her newly repainted bathroom for a Look! feature.

While Holly's taste may be a bit too *strong* for some, we urge you to pay attention to her can-do attitude and the growing desire we're seeing all over for stronger, more saturated colors. We guarantee, that if Martha Stewart is worth her salt, she'll soon be showing off some stronger colors in place of her soft, late 90's off-whites. (Thanks, Holly!)

Greetings! The total repaint of my apartment started in the bathroom and began with a piece of privacy film...

...applied to this air-shaft window. I liked it so much...

I applied the rest to this window and removed the shutters that were here and added these two shelves & plants.

The ceiling is BM 1367 primrose petals; the wall is BM 338 early dawn with a wash of white...

cabinet, shelves and tub in accent color (BM 1371 plum perfect.)

Ceiling too high to make a perfect line, so I dropped the color and added the stripe! Also painted the edge of the yellow shelf plum.

Baskets make great storage.

I love to bathe by candlelight!

The star collection all came from local thrifts. The row of stars under the shelf -- 8 Jello molds I sprayed gold (total cost: $1.50). Finding treasures on the cheap is part of the fun and pleasure. Most of the things here were from the street boutique (found) or from a thrift. My bathroom is light and bright and makes me happy day and night. It's a joy.

oooooh. i really like this. especially the shelves in the windows and the accented doors. i'm not sure i'd have had the balls to paint the tub, though. either way, looks fab, and it seems to be one of those inspiring new spaces that just lights up your whole home.

It's cute!

Except for painting the tub, this is all well within the scope of a renter who's allowed to paint, too. And it's a total win for the homeowner who wants to live with an old bathroom (with all its awkward bits that need to be visually distracted from) rather than doing major renovation.

I am a rent-stabilized and here for 30 years, next month. I am fortunate to have such a terrific landlord, too, after a series of real stinkers.

A paint-job being overdue, he gave me a one-month's rent rebate for doing the job myself.

The tub was painted white, so moving on to plum was just another color. The inside of the tub was epoxied when I moved in and I stripped it and took it back to porcelain. While it isn't perfect, it's better than epoxy!

Kiss your landlord for me. I'd assumed you owned and were simply like me in resisting gut renovation in favor of keeping the historic details as-is.

I love the shelves across the windows. Are these custom or can you buy window shelf kits somewhere?

Nice work.

Thanks, bryan.

I had one shelf in each window when I removed the shutters, plugged the holes and then got more.

All of them are merely pieces of wood 3/4 in. thick, cut to fit, primed, painted and sitting on small wedges of wood that are nailed into the woodwork.

The shelves are removeable allowing me to open the windows inward to wash them.

The wood was purchased at the shop on First Avenue and 97th Street.

Though the colors and style don't fit my personal taste, I think you've done a GREAT job, Holly, of being incredibly creative and making a bathroom that really suits YOUR style and that you can be happy spending time in every day. A double thumbs up and pat on the back to you for being so ingeniously creative!

Cheers from one Holly to another!

Lively loo you've got there - love the tub and the candle photo, too. You've got some creativity going on in there. It reminds me of my friend Sharon, she painted her clawfoot bathtub in fun colors. Once, she sponged it (when the sponge technique was really in, circe late 1980s) and it has been every color since, from crimson to eggplant to silver.

Holly, knock 'em dead girl!

I love this! "Easter egg" describes it perfectly. Great colors. The shelves in the window are great.

If you like African violets as you may have inferred I do, perhaps you will appreciate this tip (from Ralph Snodsmith of the Garden hotline): Ralph moves his violets in October from north/east windows to south/west windows until April.
This year, for the first time, I did that and they have bloomed continually! They are now back in the bathroom (north/east) and still in flower.

How bright and cheery! What a great idea to revitalize an older bathroom. It looks great! Love the shades of purple. Shelves are always a plus for a nice look and additional storage. Your shelves look awesome. Nice Job! Could you possibly come and do my bathroom over???? Just kidding, but I'm going to copy some of your ideas.
