This just in from Jill: Along the lines of the IKEA holder for the electric razor, a friend in SF, Teresa, invented a new way to hang coats and keys. These are drawer pulls that she screwed into the wall. She had to saw off the head of the screw that came with the pulls, but one could always buy a threaded rod without a head and replace the screws entirely. It works very well. (Thanks Teresa & Jill!)

The drawer pulls are from Target, not Ikea.
They are indeed called "Whistle" and run about $2.50 each (at least that's what my co-worker paid for the South Bay). Yes, I could have
gone to the hardware store to get the screws without the heads but then I would have eight extra screws with heads. That would be a little wasteful. Just a little but still . . .

Those look all right since they have a slight groove at the top to catch things. The family I babysit for recently redid their home in a Scandinavian modern style with bathroom "hooks" that are just like that minus the groove. You hang up a towel and it falls right off -- worst bathroom hardware ever.
omigawd! this is such a good idea. How do you cut off the screw's head?
what are those drawer pulls called? i can't find them on the ikea site.
Nice job! I can imagine these mounted on simple teak wood too. I really like this - sweet!

I saw a similiar use of these pulls at a now closed modern home furnishing store near my home.
ikea has coat hooks that look similar to that. but the top screws off. so you can use a normal screw. it also has a lip all the way around to keep things on. they were really cheap too.
email me and i can take a picture.
Those would also be great to hang potholders and kitchen towels in the kitchen.
It's super easy to get headless screws at a hardware store. I had to get some recently and the guy led me right to them. Probably much easier than wrestling with a hacksaw.
Great idea though! I'm still jonesing to try the previous idea to hang a hairdryer.
Target (at least in Madison, WI) has drawer pulls identical to these, I believe they are called "whistle" and are $3-$4 each. I'm currently putting them in my kitchen.
These are called "Tower Knobs," they could serve the same purpose, but these look like they might keep your hangables on better because of the deeper groove.
