Look!: LVHRD's Architectural Duel

lvhrdj1.JPG
It was a room full of hundreds of 'lumber jacks for a day' watching two architectural firms, Konyk, and FXFowle, design and build under pressure. The point of the event, organized by LVHRD, was to Build an Alaskan Wildlife Research Facility using drinking straws...

lvhrdj2.JPGThe straws represented the otherwise useless Alaskan Oil Pipeline in a post-oil world.
An unusual form of entertainment, live action model making seemed to captivate the crowd for over 2 hours!

Fun to watch them first sketch out ideas and then, using the minimal tools at their disposal, build the required components--watchtower, amphitheater, and scientist housing.

Here's two of the many onlookers who dressed for the occasion.

Each team couldn't see what the other team was building...

A cool amphitheater by the FXFowle team thanks to creativity, a scissor, and a glue gun.

Konyk's design was more radical. They sliced the earth in half and filled it with pipes to create underground housing.
