It's not often that we come across a modernist bed and breakfast. But when we do, we can practically feel that heavy Victorian norm for B&B's lifting off our shoulders. That's how we felt when we entered the Guest House at Field Farm near Williamstown, MA last weekend. It's an inspiration for not only B&B's, but our own home...
Field Farm is the 1948 home of Lawrence and Eleanor Bloedel, avid art and furniture collectors. Designed by Edwin Goodell, Jr., the home and its land is now the property of the Trustees of Reservations, who operate the home as a bed and breakfast.
With only five guest rooms, we felt lucky to stay in the home, which is still filled with original modernist furnishings and artwork. The windows themselves are artwork from inside the building, capturing views of Mount Greylock and the Berkshires surrounding the Farm.
We noted the home's fearless use of color on the walls (a local hardware store knows exactly how to mix each color with a simple request for the "Field Farm living room" or "Field Farm gallery bedroom"). Cork tile, which has held up beautifully over the 60 years since construction, is the predominant flooring material throughout the home. The loving display of books, fresh flowers, and photos throughout the home inspired us to do more of this in our own home.

Mid-C Frank grew up near this, but not with such wonderful mid-c furnishings -- I'll have to stay here sometime.
