September NY Design Meetup: Jesse Engle's DesignMyRoom.com

The computer revolution continues. Last week, at our 4th Meetup, we showcased a new, free online service that allows you to do what it says - design your own room - using fancy new online tools. Virtually hosted by Robert Verdi, DesignMyRoom.com promises to make your imagination concrete by allowing you to change everything before your eyes...

Using their online tools, you can choose your room, paint the walls, add furniture, lay down carpet and then print out a list of everything you've just chosen.

To make the experience more enticing, there is a host, Robert, and a handful of features pros (Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz, Rebecca Cole, Amy Lau, etc), who have rooms of their own to show off.

While everything in their system right now is sponsored product, you can add your own items and ideas, and it will get more exciting as you share your rooms with others and allow them to change them and/or rate them. Right now, they are still in Beta and adding functionality monthly.

Take the Tour, check it out and let us know what you think.

From the tour it appears the website could be very helpful with visualizing a finished room. So I attempted creating a room and ran into trouble almost immediately when my room's layout did not match any of the standardized layouts. Next problem came in selecting flooring because the selections are not sufficiently categorized to prevent having to page through literally 1000 selections of wood flooring types. With item selections apparently limited to participating manufacturers and retailers, Mr. Engle and partners have a LOT of work to do to make this site truly usable and user-friendly. His efforts with this project however, are worth applauding. I hope it will develop into an effective design tool.

John H - thanks for checking out the site. Yes, there are certainly things about it that we want to improve and you've found a few of them. It's always difficult when you create something completely new to know when exactly it's ready to launch. Especially a site like this that is so community driven (we want users to play an active role in shaping new features). We've heard from many users who absolutely love the site in it's current form, but we're certainly not standing still. Improving the ability to browse through some product categories, like hardwood flooring, is on the list. As is adding more room images to design with (btw: if you have a photo of your room handy, please send it to me, I'd like to take a look). We're also actively working to bring on more products--something that will be an ongoing process. If there are specific products/brands that you'd like to see on the site, please let me know. Lastly, we're planning to allow people to upload products themselves that they can use in their designs. Again, thanks for the feedback. If you've got more, we're all ears. And Pixie: I hope you'll add us back to your delicious page! :)
