Does anyone know if any crib can be converted to a toddler bed, or does it have to be a special one? We are set to move my son to a toddler bed. In fact I found one on Craig's list and made arrangements to pick it up on Saturday, and the woman totally blew us off - she was not home, never called, and never got in touch after the missed appointment. Why do people do this?
Matilda,
Some can. It depends on how high the crib is, as most tend to be higher than a toddler bed should be.
If the gate door is removable or lowers all the way to the edge of the mattress, you're in luck. Now, you just have to make sure your toddler can get in and out -safely-. If it's too high, don't play with fire, sweetie. Find another toddler bed.
OK armchair historians/interior designers, here's one for you. Is there a name for the type/shape of chair that inspired the CB2 "Surf" chair, featured in June in Adam's apartment: http://chicago.apartmenttherapy.com/chicago/good-questions/good-questions-help-010079.
The same shape is also reflected in the dining chairs in the first listing under today's Craigslist scavenger.
Any thoughts on where to find a similar upholstered chair for a CB2 price?
Altneratively, an armless slipper chair with "stiletto" metal legs could work in my space, or maybe something like this: http://www.marimekko.fi/ENG/interior/fabric/verhoilukankaat/esimerkkeja/page_6.htm, but I'm having a tough time finding ones that are not too deep nor expensive (we have a narrow space so 32" d is the max).
PS--Local thrift stores/flea markets generally have been a bust.
d in dc, your links don't work...
Hopeful that the modernist mavens on AT can help me with this:
I just bought some used Breuer Cesca chairs (v. happy!), and need to get a couple sets of the round gliders. I've found them online, but the shipping cost for about $4-$6 worth of plastic doubles the total cost.
Is there anywhere in NYC that stocks these "over the counter"? Even at a relatively inflated $4 for a set of 4, I'd save money over mail order.
(Alternately, if you need to buy some yourself, drop me a line and we can split the shipping charge!)
Hmm...not sure why not working. If you go to AT Chicago and search "Good Questions Adam" it's the first one that pops up--from June 22.
Working on the Marimekko picture. They are the chairs in the gallery of upholstery fabrics covered in the Bottna fabric in black and white. Will repost when I can figure this out!
Ok I figured it out! The punctuation in my message was pulled into the link. Sorry for that!! Here are the two links from my prior post:

Was hoping someone could help out. I'm in love with the Poltrona Frau Quadra sofa (http://www.designboom.com/snapshots/london_02/poltronafrau.html) but am looking for something more reasonably priced. Does anyone have any leads for similar sofas, or places that can copy? Thanks.
d in dc, you hit it on the head, it's a slipper chair; armless "arm chairs" are usually called slipper charis regardless of overall shape. I guess you could also call that chair a side chair; the ones that are shown in the classifieds are side chairs, but if you're looking for an upholstered one, i'd stick with "slipper chair" if using it in a search.
Some armless side chairs are called
"parsons" chairs, but those usually have wooden legs and are more traditional looking and used like desk or dining chairs.
where to buy? it's obvious, i suppose, but have you checked ikea or west elm?
Thanks friend. Any thoughts on the Surf chair? It's more like a bucket shape than a straight up slipper chair--I liked the curviness of it to contrast against our boxy sofa (Dublin chaise sectional from Room & Board) and other very hard rectangular lines in our apt. I've sat on CB2's current "Bucket Chair" and but unfortunately it's not very comfortable.
I think the West Elm armless sectional could work w/ those sexy stiletto legs, but the fabric coincidentally is the same exact fabric as our sofa...was hoping for something different. Think it would cost $$$ to have it recovered w/ something different? Not sure if it's worth it.
Hey,
Does anyone have a suggestion for a good color of ceiling paint to go with warm white walls? Should it just be the same white? A barely-blue? A very light parchment?
The rest of the room has lots of color in the furniture, textiles, and art.
thanks!
d in dc. i've seen this chair at this store in boston. can't vouch for the quality---but it is a similar shape & is very inexpensive!

I live in a first floor apartment on a busy street. Does anyone have suggestions on window dressing other than cafe curtains? I'd like the top half of the window to be bare to allow sunlight in.
Thanks!
lori
you can buy "top down/bottom up" shades, which open both from the top and from the bottom. if you google "top down shades" you should be able to find some! if you're crafty, they're actually pretty easy to make as roman shades. you just add another set of cords that pulls the other way
Anyone see the most recent SSBS (featuring yet another smallest, coolest entrant, the loft in San Diego)?
I loved the grey "semi-gloss" curtains used by the NYC Greenwich Village homeowner, anyone have any idea what material was used, or how I might find out?
Thanks all.
d dc, definitely not worth recovering that chair, if you were going to go that expense, you could get something from ligne roset or maurice villency !
but seriously, do you know who manufactured your sofa? stores like west elm do not design their own furniture, exactly, they usually get their items from larger manufacturers and sell them with exclusive fabrics (or not so exclusive). so maybe the company that made your sofa also makes that chair and you'd be able to locate it through the manufacturer.
another thing i would try is, since you seem to be looking for the metal legs, i wonder if there is a chair out there that you like with wood legs that you might be able to replace the legs with a stylish metal leg, that would be cheaper and much easier to do than recovering the fabric.
Question: We have two dressers -Drexel, 1960's walnut ,6 drawer horizontal and 5 drawer gents piece. We love them but never know what kind of bed and night tables to put with them????? We have a white canvas padded headboard right now - but are looking into a platform bed (I like the one at Atlantico and Room and Board, forgot the names). I think the walls will be all white except for the long wall in back of the bed which I think will now be in my new favorite color(!)from Michael and Walker's hallway (winsor haze).
I could keep the bedding all white or go for the Martin duvet cover at Unisonhome.com
So sorry, now 2 questions: what kind of bed & nightable woods to go with the dressers AND do you think the lavender Martin duvet cover will be too dark against the blue/grey wall.???
Re Poltrona Frau alternative...
It's not a sectional but maybe the DEVON SOFA from gus modern? click my name for the link...
lori. I live on the ground floor in a street-facing apartment. I have 3 sets of custom, flush-mounted top-down/bottom-up roman shades. Here's a pic for your reference. http://www.flickr.com/photos/83851528@N00/83511283/
Does anyone know of any place online where I can get prints/posters/photo's of new york? Local photographers are great as are big sites. I want some lovely prints to hang in my room but art.com is a.so massive b.so generic and c.want to charge me £100 to get something put onto canvas. Any links would be appreciated!
thanks Enrique! your shades look awesome. I'm also thinking about cafe style shutters.
lori,
I also have top-down, bottom-up shades, and love them for both the privacy and the light control. I purchased cellular shades for their insulating value, and they create a very clean, minimalist window. Got mine at Smith & Noble online, have been extremely happy with both price and service.
