Good Questions: Color Scheme For My Apartment?

3.25table.jpgHello AT,

Due to a leak in the roof and subsequent stain, painters will need to come to fix the place, and because of this, I thought I'd take advantage of the situation and give the whole place an update.

My problem is that I'm a bit stumped choosing a color scheme for my apartment.

Here's what I have to work with:The picture to the left shows the color of my kitchen and the slate floors (both were there when i got the place); the slate is in the bedroom as well as the main room, and the kitchen color is also the color of the bathroom door and frame.

The wall in front of the bathroom door is shared with the bedroom, and therefore, should coordinate...

Coordinating with furniture at the moment is a non-issue, because the only furniture i have so far is a block wardrobe (think ikea pax with wood veneer finish), a futon-ish bed, and dining room table, all of which i hope to replace with "grown up" furniture.

Even if I decide to keep the kitchen/main room white, what colors can I choose for the bedroom and bathroom that will make the apartment coherent?

My first thought was to paint the main bathroom wall bright yellow, however that would completely clash with the door.

In my My cure questionnaire, I wrote that I'd like this place to be "Chic, Welcoming-cozy, and efficient".

If I were to describe my style it would be like a modern boutique hotel.

Any Ideas or suggestions?

Thanks! Sanna

Pale yellow (think butter) and cream work really well with shades of gray. I'd go with a retro color scheme and mix it up with modern furniture. You can always get away with minimal furniture if you go the modern route.

Personally I would opt for a soft blue or green or you could do both as long as they coordinate with one another. For furniture I would go with a light brown which is more forgiving then white or khaki but just as versatile. For inspiration I would look to one large art piece- poster, painting etc and then use accent pieces like throw pillows, lamps etc to pull it all together. Use brighter or more wild colors here that way you can change it out if you get tired of it without having to redo the entire apartment. I would definitely add plants for color and visual appeal. To get the feel of a modern boutique hotel scour thrift stores, ebay, and craigslist for modern looking items that coordinate with one another.

Good luck!

think about the 'temperature' of the colors you have and the colors you are considering relative to the amount of light you get/your climate.

Hi Sanna--Wow! I'm a little jealous of your completely clean slate. Of course, that's what makes it really tough to get started, because I think there are a lot of different colors that could work with a blue-brown-gray palette for the flooring (some good suggestions above, and there are probably lots more possibilies). My best advice would be to invest a couple bucks in some magazines, and just start flipping through for photos of homes that have a similar flooring to yours. Tear out and collect the ones you like the feel or look of, and pay attention to the wall colors they show--maybe that would be a good way to start getting some ideas a little more narrowed down. (Pay attention to the furniture ideas in them too, since your future purchases in that department will contribute to the overall feel of your home too!)

Also, with regards to the bathroom color--it seems a shame to choose your bathroom scheme around an existing color on the door frame, Unless you really like that color (it was a little unclear in your post whether you actually much care for that shade, or are just looking for something to match it since it's there). The door frame could both be easily painted to match a new scheme, so why not focus on choosing wall and trim colors that really speak to you for that space, and then just have that particular door and frame painted along with the rest of the place? If you have a white main space, the easiest trim color for coordination purposes would probably be white as well.

If you're really concerned about "coherence", you could also choose either similar or complementary shades fo the bedroom and bathroom wall colors. However, if you have have a transition through the white main space from one to the other, it doesn't seem so important to me.
