Hovet Mirror

3-20-hovet.jpgReflecting... Yesterday, Fifi reminded us of a great product we had previously seen at IKEA — the Hovet Mirror. Standing just over 77 inches tall and 30 inches wide, we think this mirror is a steal for $99.99. Compare it to DWR's Atlanta Mirror that has nearly identical dimensions but is $600. The IKEA mirror's frame is aluminum while the DWR frame is stainless steel, but both are approved for use in "wet areas"...

i have this(the IKEA) in my entrace hall and it is a smash! And it lies just like the Atlanta in the pic, on the floor. I got it half price from the returns department - someone returned it due to supposedly having a scuffed frame but after looking at it for 15 minutes, me, my brother and an IKEA employee did not find a scratch!

I love that mirror. I want several.

I have 3 of these on one wall in my dining room. I get many many compliments on them.

Also the Ikea MONGSTAD has similiar dimensions (and a huge frame) for $150.

I really like this mirror but the one in the store nearest to me has a funhouse effect. It slightly distorts and stretches people. This post gives me hope that it is just the sample one in the marketplace at my IKEA and that other people have not had that problem. Time to rent a truck!

My test of a mirror is to stand in front of it and do some knee bends while looking into my own eyes. If my eyes look googly, like they're underwater, the mirror is crap. Every time I look into an Ikea mirror I see my face go wavy. Mirrors, good ones, are really expensive because getting the glass right is hard. Ikea mirrors may be the worst, on par with over the closet mirrors from BBB. For that matter, the ones at DWR and that other place in SoHo blow chunks too.

I was all set to reserve a zipcar to get myself to Ikea this weekend before I saw the comments about the 'funhouse' effect and can absolutely forsee that being a problem on cheap mirrors.

I've been thinking about a mirror from CB2 (link below), anyone had any experience with theirs?

Although - the three in King Joey's loft look pretty great!

Anna, I think your Ikea store might be showing off a bad mirror! I use it to get ready every morning. No 'funhouse' issues here.

I first saw this at my hair dresser's salon. She has several of them suspended from the ceiling! You can't beat the price point, there are similiar mirrors for 3 and 4 times that!

No funhouse issues to report here, and mine are seen at some pretty far distances (25+) feet where you'd really notice.

I'm with Anna and Wavy...I'd love to get one of IKEA's huge mirrors (I was eyeing the Mongstad for a while) but the funhouse effect is present in every one of their mirrors that I checked. It's not terribly pronounced and perhaps it's subtle enough for most people to not notice, but it's just enough to bother me.

I love this mirror and also own it. This has got to be one of IKEA's all-time Top 10 best-designed & reasonably-priced pieces (along with the Malm bed).

Hey, how about a Top 10 countdown focusing on the best of IKEA! That would be a great list for those of us who appreciate lower price-points. You could feature the IKEA product and then a more expensive "designer" counterpart. That would be a fun feature.

Yes, I still *heart* IKEA...

I have this mirror in my hallway; no wavy-weirdness at all. I have several large IKEA mirrors in my home and they are all terrific, no problems whatsoever.

What if I wanted to hang this horizontally on the wall? Do you think I'd need to stud-mount it or is there some way that I could safely hang it on sheetrock? Stud mounting limits me from putting it exactly where I'd want...

By the way, does a huge mirror on a small wall still make the room look bigger? Or does something so huge actually make the room look smaller?

Hey Lane,

This mirror isn't incredibly heavy (at least the IKEA version isn't). You can certainly mount it horizontally, but I'd probably advise against wall anchors because a mirror isn't something you want to try your hand at structural calculations with. Have no fear though, this mirror is hollow in the back. You could mount a furring strip to the wall that spanned the studs & use it as a cleat to hang the mirror on. Does that make sense?

Thanks lgrl, it's for sale, tell a friend.

Is the Ikea mirror safe when leaning against the wall? I have 2 cats and I am worried they will get behind it and topple it over. Is that a possibility or is it too heavy for cats to topple it?

Thanks!
