Shopping: Sunday Trip to Mxyplyzyk

We stumbled upon a weekend sidewalk sale over at Mxyplyzyk this past weekend and though the items on sale were not of GREAT interest, they had a number of really nice items, some of which were colorful, some of which were nice new shapes and some that were both.

A whole wall of shiny, metal storage containers for the industrial chic. You won't find these at the Container Store.

A round-topped water carafe and glass. Never seen this svelte design before. How does the glass stand up, you ask? It has one off-center flat side which makes it lean (even cooler), though it's not good at holding a whole glass of water when standing.

A mini Bolton trashcan used as a wastepaper basket or kitchen can. We love these hinged lid designs.

Bought one of these to go under our desk as a wastepaper basket in our new office. Bright orange rubber buckets for about $16-$25 apiece.

Many, many lightly colored glass bottles. Don't quite know what you would do with these, but they are beatiful.

Woven wastepaper baskets from China. Like the old rag rugs of yore, these are probably made out of recycled plastics.

A high-tech task lamp with halogen head that we'd never seen before. They had a whole line of these medical-looking light fixtures as sconces, floorlamp and task.

as nice as some of their stuff is, it doesn't make up for the fact that the owner is a nasty, jerk.

New Yorkers get all the fun stuff.

I LOVE the stuff at Mxyplyzyk, but tend to agree with joe... the entire staff (which, um seems huge for two rooms of merchandise...) always seems pained, dour, put-upon, and engaged in some sort of ongoing drama to which customers aren't privvy.

I have never EVER seen any of them joke, laugh, or even smile... and ironically, their stuff has such great energy and a tremendous sense of humor.

I agree. The staff acts like you are bugging them if you try to buy something. It makes me not want to go in there, and in fact, I haven't for quite some time.

it all trickles down from the big, fat, bald owner. gotta figure he's making the staff miserable, so they don't feel good enough about their jobs to give a sh-t.

Is there anyplace in the Nashville area I could find stuff like the metal storage containers?

Unreal. These comments boards are kinda cool I suppose - but any fool with real or imagined thoughts can just post on these without any accountability. The owner is one of the friendliest people I have ever known. His staff really respect him - he treats them very well after over a decade in business. It is more like a small family. Most of his staff have been employed there several years. Many loyal customers return year after year after year to shop at this great place. The customer service is top-notch. I mean really, 'joe' - sticks and stones - whoever you really may be. And one question to Apartment Therapy - is there anyway to monitor this board - keep the comments about the businesses that you showcase and loose the totally mean-spirited words?
