If this contest does one thing, it shows that Brooklyn has serious gardening talent and a wonderful sense of community on the blocks that do garden together. When walking the streets I would see the signs on the blocks that chose to participate, and they all were ambitious and beautiful - no doubt there are some who think their own block should have been first.

Back in July Anne Raver went around with the judges (the article has since been placed behind the Times Select roadblock), and the judging and competition was serious, with 42 semifinalists culled from 225 entries received. My own favorite areas were by Windsor Terrace and over by Kensington (slideshow coming soon). One focus of the competition was how the plantings considered the biggest plants of all - the trees - which provide so much shade and filter our air. It is easy to overlook their constant presence and their needs while we fuss about over the little guys.

Congratulations to all the entrants - as a visitor to Brooklyn, I am grateful for the inviting green that is out in the neighborhoods.
