Brownstoner continues to roll out backyard peeks at Brooklyn gardens most of us would otherwise not get to see. This one from the other week, by a talented garden designer in Williamsburg, uses what I think is one of the most attractive grasses out there, the Hakonechloa macra (Japanese Forest Grass), a graceful and adaptable plant...

Why Hakonechloa macra is a great garden addition:
- It's beautiful in all seasons (just look at these photos!).
- Particularly nice when the wind blows through it.
- In NYC it is a perennial and will come back the following year.
- Slow growing, but can become a great groundcover.
- Good in both sun and shade.
- Does well in containers.
- Easily divided when it grows larger.
- No major pest or disease problems.
Feel free to add your pros/cons to the comments below~

The garden in autumn.
Dave's Garden website has basic information and glowing praise for the plant.
The Brownstoner post with the designer/owner's comments is here.
This space belongs to a garden designer, Tyler Horsley, and you can see more of his projects on his website. The top photos were via Brownstoneer, but the other seasonal photos are via Tyler's photo gallery.

So pretty, I wonder if it would hold up in Atlanta?

Georgia hardiness zones run from 6-8. These grasses all seem to be fine for zones 5-9, so you should be fine. You could aslo contact the growers that are listed on the Dave's Garden website (link above, in the post) and see what specific advice they would give. I had contacted Bluestone Perennials a while back and they were very helpful - but they are in Oregon so you may want to try one of the resources listed that is closer to Atlanta.
