PlantTherapy: Mac Carbonell and the Flowerbox Building

2008-06-13carbonell1.jpg

Have yet to get down and check this out in person, but was delighted to find a treasure trove of pictures on the internet for this beautiful flowerbox project, containing 'over 500 plants and 80 different species' by landscape designer Mac Carbonell for the Flowerbox Building on the LES.

Take a look after the jump, images from Mac Carbonell's own Flickr page...

The first installation happened last Sept., 2007, and by now the flowerboxes must once again be on their way to overflowing.

View the complete picture set on Carbonell's Flickr page here.

Carbonell's landscape design business is Verdant Gardens and his website has photos of his other projects.

These must have a fair bit of upkeep, and not sure if the tenants are allowed to do their own gardening or not (the condo website that first detailed the project is now disabled). But gardening is low on the list for most apartment building designs. I was excited to hear of this project a few years ago, if only for the hope that gardening made its way into the design of new building construction of all income levels.
