Recently the New York Daily News reviewed mail-order flower services for Valentine's Day in an article entitled War of the Roses. They ordered a dozen red roses from 4 top online companies and one local florist. I would love to get this assignment!
Here are their results:
PRO FLOWERS: longest lasting, still standing after a week.
THE PETAL PUSHER: Local flower shop; best value and almost lasted a week.
Martha Stewart: looked great days 1-4, started to wane on the 5th.
1-800 FLOWERS: started to wane after day 4.
FTD: looked horrible by the third day.
A survey like this can only be for fun; a short-lived bunch can happen for many reasons, not necessarily to do with the person who sells them to you. A long-lived rose can also turn out to be generic and uninspired - unworthy of comparison to a high quality cousin that may go quicker but opens fully and fades gracefully.
Regardless of quality, always make sure to trim off leaves that fall below the water line in the vase. This will most certainly help the life of your flowers. In the NY Daily News pics I could not help but notice the leaves in the vase water. I can only wonder if that contributed to the overall poor results.
Keep in mind that most online services and local florists will have a vase life guarantee. If your flowers fall apart within a few days they will give you a refund or replacement.

One online florist we adore is Organic Bouquet, a company that delivers organic flowers directly from the growers to you. The reasons for ordering from them are as beautiful as the flowers themselves.
Are you ordering flowers for Valentine's Day? Have you experienced good/bad service from any of the above? Had great luck with a local florist? We'd love to hear from you.

Huh. Every bunch of flowers I've ordered from Martha's Flowers (granted, not roses) have lasted a really long time. Of course, Martha's Flowers is run out of ProFlowers, but I've had less luck with ProFlowers (though they are also good)
I second Pro Flowers; I've both sent and received from them and they have always been top drawer (great customer service as well). Calyx and Corolla are also terrific; I've used them several times and have never been disappointed.
I've received many flowers from ProFlowers and they have all been terrific and lasted a really long time. I especially love their tulips.

There's a deli stand on 34th Street and like...Lex I think - on the south side of 34th Street that has a HUGE flower booth. Like most other deli vendors they have the 2dozen for $10 sale. Everytime I have picked up roses from them they have lasted almost 2 weeks.
Organic Bouquet is fabulous but don't forget to get a coupon code off the net. I saved 8 bucks. lol
ok, so i work at an environmental org and we get a lot of weird stuff in the mail. for some reason we get this quarterly duck hunting newsletter, and there was a section once where people submitted stories of how they got in trouble with their wives because of duck hunting related events (went out hunting, got drunk, slept in a ditch, didnt come home until two days later, etc) and then how they made it up to their wives later. the apologies always involved flowers, and there was always a mention about how the wife was just *so* happy to get flowers that the husband's stupidity/recklessness/drunkeness/etc just didn't matter anymore and they all had a big laugh about it.
there was also a link to a website claiming to take the "difficulty" out of buying flowers for your wife. we of course went to the site and the flower buying guide ("how big is the right size?") compared bouquet sizes to a football. they took care to note that the football would not be included with your order.
I've used Proflowers and 1800 Flowers.
My mom had the flu last winter so I ordered her 30 tulips to be delivered the next day from 1800 Flowers. (I paid extra for that!) They did not arrive on time and I was told they wouldn't arrive for another couple days. They wanted ME to pay EXTRA to have another florist deliver them the day AFTER they were supposed to be there. I cancelled the order and reported them to BBB.
I've used Proflowers several times and recieved flowers from them and never had a problem. I'd recommend them anytime!
I like www.flowerbud.com. I've been using them for years.
Amy Stewart (who writes the blog "Dirt" and who has a book that just camed out: "Flower Confidential") says Esperance roses last a long time. I ordered some from http://www.organicbouquet.com/
I ordered my valentine's roses through organic bouquet a few weeks back and can't wait to see what they look like. When I ordered, there was a code (GIFT20) which may still work. 20% off. Not bad!
I use ProFlowers. They have great customer service and stand by their guarantee. I received Gebera Daisies for my birthday and a third of them were dead in less than three days. I called them and without any issues are either sending me a new bouquet or letting me send it to anyone I want for free.
My husband discovered Proflowers a few years ago, and proudly presented me with a box of two dozen red roses for Valentine's Day. Were they great quality? Sure. Did they last forever? Yes. Would I have rather had a professional arrangement that perhaps was smaller and lasted less, but did not have to spend an hour cutting the stems, pulling off the leaves, having tons of trash to deal with afterward, and trying to find enough vases for all the flowers? Hells yeah.
I hope I don't sound ungrateful...I just wish I could somehow (without hurting his feelings) make him forget Proflowers existed and just order me normal flowers, or arrange them himself. I just don't get as much pleasure from a box of "raw" roses as a gift.
