apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

PlantTherapy: Safe Transport

2008-06-12umbra2.jpg

This past week I had the pleasure of watching some very excellent packers go to work and move our entire apartment's goods. They bundled it up smartly, fitted it like an enormous stacking puzzle into the back of their box truck, and whisked it all safely through two boroughs and up three flights of stairs.

Although not on the same scale, I always have this dilemma with buying Greenmarket flowers and getting them back to my apartment unscathed by the rest of the goods. I wanted to share my solution and possibly see how you all manage to do the same...

So this was my solution. Someone was throwing this out (above) at my building and I grabbed it and washed it out to use. It's slim, weighs nothing, takes up only a little space in my market bag and stops the other items from crushing the flowers. If I take a long walk after the market I can also pour water in to keep the stems somewhat hydrated. And it beats carrying them over the shoulder 'cave-man style' (which I do see at the market), or having them get crushed in the commute.

I am unsure of the maker, but it is similar in idea to the Umbra Orvino or Garbino (below) plastic bath bins that are easily found around the city stores.

Yes I have been doing this because it's so hot and I have other errands, like to do teh greenmarket before the crowds arrive, so use an old yogurt container or something like that in my bag - I either brign water or buy it and water tehm right away - worth it so teh beautiful flowers will last.

Thanks, bubble! And apologies to the Geico Cavemen... :)

I seriously do see many people wielding flowers about at the markets, though, and think they must just have the good fortune of living nearby.

Some vendors can use a lot of wrapping as well, and I like to just take them as-is instead. Tough to do sometimes with crowds and a long commute.

I'd also love to know who your movers were.

a soda bottle with the top cut off would be a cheap (and light) solution as well. reduce, REUSE, recycle

itsabecky - that's so true! And more in the spirit of the Greenmarket!

Also, the moving service I used was RVS. The man's name is Ray and he is efficient. I have used him for a number of years - he has helped me move a few times, and always a pleasure.

He has a review over on YELP.

His service is also rated quite well on Citimove, which is how I first found him.
