Room and Board Couch Round-up: Rating the good, the bad and the un-comfy

coll_mercerduluth.jpg
We have all flipped through the Room and Board Catalogue and thought, "gosh, these couches are so much sleeker than the ones at Pottery Barn, but what the heck do they feel like?" Well, your wish is our command. While visiting Room & Board in SoHo last month, we tried out all of the couches for comfort. If we didn't like the shape we didn't bother to sit.

OUR TOP COMFORT PICKS:

  • The Mercer- Shown above. Like it. Comfy. (79"-$1000)

  • The Delancy- Comfy, but not very deep. (72"-$1050.00)

  • The Nolan- We like this. Comfy, but not for all night lounging. (75"-$1,150)

    andre couch.jpg
  • The Andre- Like the Nolan, comfy but not for all day TV watching marathons. (76"-$1,300)

  • The Preston -This has a sink in (in the good way) and hang out vibe. (79"-$1,150)

    houson couch.jpg
  • The Houston - Of course, the most expensive couch also has our most positive reaction. Firm, cozy, with a nice depth. (88"-$1,700)

Stay tuned for our picks for "It'll get you by" and "What are they, high?"... Alec H.

The Jasper is also stunningly comfortable - especially the configuration with the additional chaise. It's squishy without making it difficult to get up, but also has a nice large seat and perfectly sized back. $1249 for the 71".

The Mercer is really "bouncy". You don't sink into it.

yeah we have the jasper and we love it. comfortable and it looks great, even if it is their flagship design that they put everywhere.

i also have a grace chair and it's also comfortable

if you happen to be in minneapolis, we have the outlet store here, which is mostly discontinued colors, special order returns, floor sampled, and the occastional scratched cheapie.

we have the hawthorne in doria haze (look under fabrics for under $999). it was a little bouncy at first, but is getting sinkable with time. it's deep enough that my feet don't touch the floor (though this is not saying much). if i have one complaint, it is that the back cushions squash down and out a little- they don't stay square like the photo. so now i rotate them to keep them even.

I don't know about their couches, but the bf and I went down to the South Coast Plaza R&B a couple of weekends ago to test-drive the armchairs. We probably sat in 3/4 of them and absolutely fell in love with the York. Did not want to get out of it. Absolutely delicious (IMHO). So now we're saving up for it.

I have the Mercer couch and agree that it is more bouncy than comfy. I adore it, but it's not a couch I'd want to watch TV in.

However, I have the Andre in form chair and OMG, it's so comfy. Just big and deep enough to curl up in with a book and so soft. Love it.

My boyfriend and I just got the Delancy - 72" because it was the only couch that was close to full length that we could get into our apartment. We looked at a lot of sectionals but couldn't find anything we both liked. It works because a 6 ft person can lie it it and not feel squashed.

Room and board has a nice selection of couches. I thought the quality seemed better than West Elm and the prices are in the reasonable range. Plus their SOHO showroom is really nice - 3 floors!

I bought a Davis oversized chair recently. It's the most comfortable that I've tried at their SOHO store, and it's just the right size for my tiny cottage. It is definitely to try out the couches before you buy one. I was originally looking at Delancy and Ian, but neither were comfortable enough for my slouching seating position.

I have the Jasper in Doria Mocha and was:

    1. Disappointed in the quality of the fabric. Even after getting the fabric swatch, you just don't realize how a 3x3 swatch will look on an entire couch. Never again will I order furniture online without checking it out live first.

    2. And 2 disappointed in the comfort. The couch is a bit on the firm side for me, but may be comfy for others.

    3. I do love the ease of use of r&b's web site, though. Viewing the full couch in color helps the ordering process a lot, but the colors aren't always accurate. Wish you could view the couch under different lighting conditions.

I just had a small Mercer delivered, after test driving most of their showroom, and it's bouncy. But I like that, and it's clean lines, and simple uncluttered feel. Plus there are no pillows for change to get lost in, or the dog to push to the floor in its never ending quest for the perfect nest.

Their store, and their sales staff, are a great visit. For those with small apartments, the furniture feels sized right.

The Houston is nice, but huge. Won't fit into most people's apartments. The Jasper felt hard and uncomfy for me.

i ordered our non-stock-color nolan (75") in may, after sitting on almost every sofa in the soho, NYC store, and it came last week.

it's actually more attractive than i expected, and pretty comfy. some of the R&B sofas had ridiculously loose cushions (i particularly remember the Ian as being really gooshy). the Mercer was nice, too--i wasn't a fan of any of the fabrics recommended for its tight cushions, so we chose the Nolan, but i liked the more supportive feel, especially for a more petite person who sometimes has trouble getting appropriate lower back contact while sitting on an average-sized couch.

i investigated most of the usual suspects--crate and barrel, pottery barn, ikea--and the R&B couches were far far nicer-looking and feeling than any of them, and similarly priced if you stayed towards the bottom of the range. the people were very helpful too, both at the store and on the phone.

a caution--getting the sofa made up in a different fabric, or the same fabric in a non-stock color, means a serious wait. we waited three months, and the wait was longer for some models (it depends on the turnaround time at the manufacturer, and if you choose a fabric that's made by the same people who make the sofa. if you want a fabric that comes from a different manufacturer than the sofa does, they'll do it, but it takes even longer).

really, though? i'm so pleased with it. i think it's one of the best things i've ever bought for a home.

I special ordered the Andre in Doria Grass. Won't be in until November. I'm getting so impatient, but I love it, so it's worth the wait. Comfortable, stylish, and best of all, I think the inset legs will make it nearly impossible to stub my toes on the corners.

We purchased the Jackson leather couch - 86". We love it. So comfortable. I fall asleep if I lay down on it. Love the fact that the back 3 pillows zip off. I have a 4 yr old. He loves it to & somehow knows not to take it apart or jump on it. Durable leather for kids is best. Can replace parts of couch in case of a unrepairable puncture. Need new back pillow, reorder new one. Bottom cushions are on w/ industrial strength velcor for easy cleaning. Doesn't seem that they will wear as easy as the dean so far.

Also have the felix cahir - love that to, guests say it's very comfy.

Also have Dean chair & ottoman. You do need to slouch a bit to sit in it, But w/ the ottoman it is like a chaise anyway.

Looked into buying Dean couch, just decided it was too blocky. Liked the padless back. Also noticed from our dean chair. The cushions will wear a bit faster than we would like. Firmer would be better. Don't want it to look shabby chic soon.

I love my Mercer (and so does the dog) as it doesn't overpower my small studio. Clean lines and comfortable without being entropy creating. Comfy enough to read a magazine but not so saggy that you don't move for the next 12 hours...

We are planning on ordering the Eugene from R&B. There were not any comments on this sofa... is it horrible to sit on? Does it look better on-line than in person? We have been everywhere and this one suits our style. Any comments would be helpful.

I am also interested in the Eugene -- love the look. Anyone tested this sofa?

We just purchased the jasper in white(fantastic!) and we did not experience the same comfort sink in feeling in the store - we understand that the sofa has not been worn in for a year like the model in the store, but we want to see if others had that same experience.

I was a little disappointed in the Jackson, especially after reading one of the comments above that really complimented its comfort... I was all geared up to buy it... Good thing I test drove it, I find it to be a little shallow so you can't quite sink in... and it's prettier on the internet... go figure. Now, the Jasper is gorgeous (white) and the ultra suede fabric is buttery delicious... I ended up buying this one!!

I ordered the Hoyt in Dilcrest Mushroom 82". The R&B rep. was very nice, but I'm not happy about the fact that they won't take my old couch away. The new couch is supposed to arrive mid-January. My old couch is 35 years old, a hand-me-down from my sister's apt. in Brooklyn. It's going to be reeaaaly interesting getting it downstairs in the freight elevator in my building. Looking forward to my new couch.

We have the Andre 88" and love it. Ordered it in August in custom Doria brown, was suppossed to be delivered on Dec 16th (ooch) but it arrived mid November! Great look and feel and the best part is that if one person is laying down there's still room for someone to sit on the other side.

We've gone back to look at accent chairs but we are waiting until January 9th - when the store gets in all the new 2006 models. The 2006 catalog is out but the soho showroom doesn't have the pieces yet.

Excellent in store customer service from Dennis - if your lucky enough to get him you'll be happy!

My fiance and I just ordered the Eugene after sitting on it at the OC store; it was really cute in person with the buttons and the legs, and seemed relatively comfy, though not "I'm sick at home and will watch DVDs all day" comfy," from what I recall. Once we get it in Feb., I'll try to take more accurate notes.

I ended up ordering the Dublin couch and loveseat. At first I was bent on getting the Porter as I liked the style. Went to the store and found out it was not comfortable at all. Next I was bent on getting the Andre - it looked so cool! Went to the store and found out it was so-so comfortable. I really liked the fabric but the comfortability-factor outweighed that. In my opinion the Andre is more of a sitting or "show" couch you have in a living room, not a couch you have in front of your television. I chose the wonderful feel and clean styling of the Dublin and love it.

We had the Savona 84" in venice spice for a few months. Very nice looking couch, but the back cushions quickly became mashed down & needed fluffing up often. The main problem though was it was way too deep a couch. Unless you're very tall, there is no way to sit on it comfortably unless you like curling your legs up and under you on the couch. R&B was very good about replacing the couch for a 10% restocking fee. (Also waiting to hear any additional fees due to wear & tear.) Just got the Eugene 86" in voltan sable (very nice fabric) and while we've solved the depth problem, this is one hard couch. It felt comfy in the store, but once you're on it for more than a few minutes it really feels hard. We've only had it a few days & I'm hoping we'll break it in and it will become more comfortable.

Blah. I'm nowhere near a R&B store, so it would be nice if someone who has sat in it could tell me that it isn't hideously awful.

I spent about two hours in the Soho store today and decided on ordering two Klein sofas. The 80" sofa and the sofa with the chaise (113") for my living room in NYC. I found the Kline to be one of the more comfortable sofas in the store with a slightly greater seat depth at 23" and comfortable low & wide padded arms. I asked a couple of men to sit in it and they found it very comfortable as well. I am special ordering a different fabric, but the stock fabric is quite nice.

    Shari-

I'd stay away from the Arcadia because of its design.

I had it for two months--barely sat on it--and the tight seat cushion slowly began to wear and slope forward. The seat was fine, frame strong, but the tight seat style doesn't hold shape or support on the front of the sofa and loses it's 90 degree angle.

Eventually, I couldn't lie on it--if I tried, I rolled forward and would, in all honestly, fall forward onto my floor or coffee table. Keep in mind, I'm 5'8, 145 lbs. A small guy.

My sister had a similar experience with of the tight back--seat sofas at R&B. Luckily, R&B was kind enough to allow me to return it.

We bought the Burke last week. The fabric has some flaws, so I called customer service who promptly sent a repair service over. They ended up having to take the couch! The couch is incredibly comfy, but I have a hard time with the fact that it came flawed and instead of giving us a new one, they opted to repair this one. If the repair doesn't work, then they'll send a new one. Not what I expected for a $1400 couch!

I am thinking about buying the Burke. My only hesitation is that it would not be comfortable enough for watching tv. What are your thoughts?

I was also thinking about the Metro, but I prefer the Burke's clean lines.

Which fabric did you get it in?

    Thanks!

    Hi Susan -

Sorry for the delayed response. It's comfy, but it's not holding up well. In fact, we're calling about it again. I'm starting to think we should have bought something from C&B. We bought the Burke in tetris froth.

I got the Hoyt in Whiskey around May 2005 and I love it. As a short person, I don't fit in most sofas because either my feet don't touch the ground or my back does not touch the backrest. I always said that when I buy my first sofa I would get one that fits me. This one feels like it was made for me...until I tried to sleep in it and found out it was too narrow.

Went to the SoHo store last weekend and sat in almost every sofa. Most comfortable for me are the the Klein/Townsend and Ian.

The Klein has a nice loungy feel that you sink into, but it's not so mushy that you have to dig yourself out. The Ian was slightly firmer but still very nice. Has a more traditional upwrite sitting position. It looks bulkier with it's box design but doesn't feel that way when you sit in it. One thing I perfered with the Klein is the lower arms. The arms on the Ian seemed too tall (I'm 5'7).

Decided on ordering the 80' Klein with the Doss fabric -- nice soft corduroy feel to it. If you can't make to a store, definitely want to request swatches. The colors I selected looked slightly different under the lighting my apt.

Doss is a great fabric. It's a microfiber with a twill pattern. You get all the benefits of durability, yet the hand feels much better than regular microfiber. My sectional is in Doss White, and it still looks as good as when I first got it.

I got my sofa at High Fashion Home. I know they carry quite a bit from McCreary Modern. The sectional I bought is discontinued though.
