You know those cool industrial baskets at Goodwill that they wheel around all of the clothes in? They're made right here in East Boston by a company who's been making canvas baskets since the 1920's. My friend Deborah uses them for fresh sheets, I put piles of stuffed animals in them, our friend Nancy stores upholstery fabric, and they would be terrific for laundry...
We like the canvas, but they also make them in vinyl (grey and yellow) which can get wet, and in lots of sizes. The baskets are usually sold just to the trade, but you can email the factory directly at industrialhome@yahoo.com. Say you heard about them on Apartment Therapy to scoop one up.

I bought the 2 bushel versions from themut.com a few years ago and we love them - we use them for toys and soccer balls and such but they will be re-purposed eventually, I'm sure. I live in Canada and I remember shipping was fairly reasonable too (I think the hampers run about $120 or so each).

I agree those would be great for laundry (or other storage). However, it seems they would take up too much space in the "average" apartment

FSIndustries doesn't stock the baskets in their RI location so you can't save shipping by picking them up, although the shipping isn't too horrible. Its something like $15ish depending on the size. They cost a lot less on the FSIndustries site than anywhere else.
lynneliese1, The smaller, lower size is really versatile even for small spaces! I had two of them in our Davis Square apt several years ago- one fit just under an IKEA LACK table (magazines) the other rolled in and out of the closet as a hamper. But the bigger sizes can easily take up some room in an apartment.
