Who has walls that are 11" deep?

OH, I know the answer to this one. My (old) house came with these (well, a 1920's version of them, anyway). The rod part of it is actually *inside* our closet -- the sleeve always stays inside the closet and the inside rod slides out when you want to use it. I asked what the heck they were when we were buying the house and the realtor told me that people used to use them to hang their clothes for the next day on them. People used to be so fancy.

the Gucci store on 5th has these really cool square ones in the mens dept. I've been in love with them ever since I saw them, but I've never seen anything like them or the ones you posted.

mscot if you do not have 11" thick walls, you are able to hang garments on both sides of the wall!

I don't understand how this works. Anyone?

What I infer from Robyn's post is that these are put on the doors of your closet. You can keep them flush when nothing is hanging on the outside of your closet or pull them out for temporary hanging (ie clothes for the following day).

I was thinking this would be good for my boyfriend's condo. He has a spare room that must have been intended as a den because it has no closets. (stupid new construction!)

He has a bed in there for when his siblings visit or when I stay over... and I've often wished for something to hang my next day clothes on... other than the door knob!!!

Not in the door...in the wall just next to the door (the closet is wider than just the door --- it has those nearly useless shelves that you have to reach through the door and push all the clothes aside to access). So the back end of the rod goes thru the wall (maybe 6") and then into the closet another few inches above those shelves. My hangers are old and only slide out to allow for about 6" or 7" of hanging space.

These go in and out of the end of a wall, like a pocket door, right?
