Another Option. After posting Sean Yoo's Matera Bed With Storage this morning, we decided to go ahead and post the similar Knickerbocker model from Brooklyn-based Wonk. We were saving it to space out the two similar products, but after comments about Matera's price, we thought we'd go ahead and add it to the discussion...
Wonk's pieces are all customizable by finish and hardware. The top image shows a base platform, headboard, and two drawers (with a possible additional two drawers on the other side). The maxed-out option (most similar to the Matera queen-sized bed) will cost approximately $1775 from Wonk. Although walnut veneer is pictured, there is a wide range of finish options available, for a fully customizable bed with storage.

That's a nice looking bed. The price is not immediately scaring me off either. I wonder if the mattress will slide on the platform, though. I guess a slip pad would solve that...

I put casters on my Mandal bed and it's great to sweep under or just put on a different wall for a change. Just put several under the center to support the weight.

Wow - this is exactly what I was looking for, and the price is not bad for something that is sturdy! I definitely like having the drawers inset slightly, it gives the bed a nice floating appearance rather than having it be this huge monolithic thing. I may be calling Wonk soon. . .

This is a great one, though I think the Stillwell bed is better. When I went to Wonk I was struck by the fact that the Knickerbocker bed looked better online than in person, and the Stillwell better in person than online.
I'm a big fan of their carbonized bamboo ply material.

Wonk doesn't have the Stillwell on display in DUMBO, they have the Lowrider (I think that's the name), which is pretty much the same design without the storage. We just ordered the Stillwell (the Knickerbocker is cool, just to square for my taste) in the carbonized bamboo and now we're just waiting for it to come in. We were so much happier supporting a local Brooklyn business whose quality blows away Bo Concept/West Elm without being any more expensive.

A simple rug pad can be used to keep the mattress from slipping. Pottery Barn has a similar bed design (the Stratton bed, which comes in a drawer version and a basket version), and they recommended a rug pad when I was thinking of buying it.

I saw the Knickerbocker at Wonk in Williamsburg today. After seeing the Modulicious by Blu Dot also in person, I've decided to go with the Blu Dot product. It seems that the build quality is a bit better - not by an order of magnitude - but enough for it to be noticeable. IMHO of course.
