I have to admit that I didn't really 'get' this one the first time around. Now I'm stunned! What you've achieved is incredible. You have fantastic attention to detail, and I really want to see your TV rigging system in action once it's up and running! I love it!

This reminds me of my eccentric "bachelor" uncle's weekend place on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

I'm with rhiana on this one - I had a total wtf moment when I first saw this one but now, I'm really impressed. This embodies the sentiment of "If you're gonna go, go all out." Good job.

I think the first round of pictures did not do the SS Waverly justice. I have fallen in love with this place.

The place looks larger than 200 sq feet. Good for you! I live in a 300 something sq ft studio and this was truly an inspiration.

I really love this. Its tiny but it looks like you weren't forced to get rid of anything that you really love and it doesn't feel cluttered. Lovely job.

Is your place really only 200 square feet - including the loft sleeping area & closet? Not doubting your word ... just making sure I'm understanding the situation correctly.

I think that's the footprint of the apartment--not the total square feet.

My favorite detail is the life preserver seat cushion on the desk chair. I can't tell you how much fishing I did as a child with my butt on one of those cushions. What a great space!

Beautiful second round of photographs! Although, I REALLY liked the hazy nature of the first round photo with the lamp/chairs/painting...

I'm not a fan of super tiny places and was generally disappointed with the east coast entries but you do have a theme and you went with it. That I certainly applaud.

There's a theory that's been attached to the "Victorians" called the "aesthetic of denseness." While I like Victorian interiors I don't have a cluttered, layered interior. You seemed to have embraced the aesthetic of densness. It's certainly an interesting interior.

The photos are better than the first batch and give a stronger sense of the space.

Still...

I just don't like it - too theme-y for my taste. And I sail and have lived on ships! I guess what I find grating is that while sail boats incorporate great space-saving innovations that could be adapted to a residence like this, all the rest of the ship stuff here feels cluttered. It's over the top and, IMO, bad decorating.

Granted, I know there are a lot of people who love love love this entry, so take my opinions with a grain of salt.

The specimen jar on the "welcome aboard" toilet holds a shark fetus, and we distressed the bathroom floors to achieve a kind of vintage steam room effect.

In terms of the square footage, we consulted a professional on the matter. Because the ceiling heights are less than 4.5ft in the crows nest (bed) and poop deck (closet above the bathroom), they aren't to be included in the square footage of additional "living areas" within the dwelling.

I like this a bit better the second time around. Like the "distressed" bathroom floor. How was it done? I assume you must own. Still think the floorplan should be shown with these re-posts though.

I love this one so much - it's completely different, and executed brilliantly. There's something fun and surprising in every picture. Did I mention that I love it? LOVE. IT.

i also agree with rhiana. i really didn't like it the first time around but i do now even though it's not my style at all.

I liked this one the first time I saw it. It wasn't my style but I appreciated what you did with the space. I have to say with these new pics I like it a whole lot more. Well done. (I really like the distressed tiles on the bathroom floor.)

i think they've done an amazing job with the space they have, they really have put a lot of thought and effort into it and it's pulled off nicely. that being said i still feel like there is too much *stuff* all around.. a lot of clutter. would make my head spin. really sweet space tho and the pics this time around are way better. :)

This second slide show does the apartment much more justice than the original entry. Very nice!

if there are two people living in this place, It deserves 10 extra points! I'm with those who didn't get it the first time but really loved it this time around.

Thanks to everyone for your compliments. We really worked hard to fully capture the place this time around...it's amazing what the right lens will do for you. The ceiling height in the crows nest is around 4.5 feet...the bathroom floors were definitely a happy accident (in tile painting) and we've even considered adding more colors to really take it to the next level.

I love this even more this time around. The desk beneath the stair is such an ideal use of space, and I love the chipped marlin on the wall going up the stairs. It's just amazing.

I am in the same boat (pardon the pun) as those who didn't get it the first time around and now completely do. Actually I hated it before and didn't understand at all how it made it to the finals. And I still hate it when I look at the original slideshow.
The difference here is that the new slideshow captures the light and height, and it no longer feels as incredibly tight and way overly done. Now it looks like a light airy space with a vision that was well executed. And it certainly embodies the spirit of the contest!! 200 sq ft!!

What is the deep blue paint? Love it!

This is amazing. I really like it, even though I'm not a fan of the nautical elements. And the shark fetus? Sorry, but that grosses me out.

Mat's heart is truely at the beach. Great use of color. Very cozy, but too much clutter for such a small space. Forget about the swinging TV idea - too many wires - unless you know something about wireless TV.

We love our baby shark, Mortimer, and while he was never born, he was saved from the trash heap at the end of a yard sale in the Hamptons - now he fearlessly protects the Waverly!

Loved your place! I used to live at 10 Christopher Street for years so I am very familiar with your street. Ate at that coffee shop on the corner many times.

Love this one! It's way over the top for my taste, and yet, that's precisely why I think it's superb. These two guys have turned this place into their taste, and in the process, they created one of the most unique apartments I've ever seen. Love it!

Liked it before. Love it now. The little touches are so nice -- still like the quirky pendant lamps in the living area. Now like yellow bedside table in the bedroom. Kitchen looks even better.
These photos are excellent.

Only thing that bothers me... maybe it's an optical illusion. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of knee/leg space under that secretary to sit.

Everything about this entry is perfect. Even the shark foetus, which squeams me to no end, works and makes sense for this space. The boat concept is brilliant because it makes the tiny scale of the apartment feel like an adventure as well as a hunker-down cabin in which to batten down the hatches against the open sea of NYC. Not only is this place themed, but the theme is resonant and meaningful. Poetic, even. Gentlemen, you're the Gold Medalists of Small Coolness in my eyes.

I like the very personal style and how you managed to turn that small space into a decent closet.

I'll have to apologize for my skepticism. I have an eye for apartment sizes and I'm definitely sure that it's not 200 square feet. 200 sqft is the living room space in the picture above. That's how small my entire studio is now too. Judging from the pictures, plus the kitchen and toilet, that apartment is around 380-400sqft, not even counting the sleeping loft area. Loft area I would guess is around 90-100.

Despite the difference in opinion in terms of square footage, I would say thumbs up for the color scheme and effective use of space. Very nice apartment.
