apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

International #16: Simpson's Southampton Sorta Shotgun Shack

Name: Peter & Joan
Location: Southhampton, England
Size: 484 sf
Rent/Own: Own

What is the advantage of SMALL? We are consumed with the challenge of manipulating the space and learning how to make it work.

We are motivated to live more efficiently, carefully, thoughtfully and living in this SMALL space makes us do just that....

What's your favorite resource for your home?

We love the integrated refrigerator, freezer and washer/dryer in the kitchen. They are hidden behind the beautiful, hardwood, cherry doors and it makes everything look so streamlined!

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home?

Our bedroom platform.

We needed to find a place to hide all of our stuff (like an excessive Freitag bag problem that Joan has)!

We designed this and worked with a carpenter to have the dream become a reality!

England's defination of a shotgun shack certainly is different from what our's in American is!

I wish I got to see more about the bathroom rather than the detail shot of that thing in the kitchen.

Where's the close-up of your Audi/Rolex/Diamond Rings?

Regarding:
"Where's the close-up of your Audi/Rolex/Diamond Rings?"
What a tacky comment.

Great apartment, I particularly love the bed and kitchen.

well the shot of the coffee machine is a bit tacky.

Do those vertical bookshelves ever tip? I especially like the grouping of vintage radio cabinet with flat panel TV, bowling pin and Keith Haring piece, even though I normally do not like Keith Haring's work. What the heck is that thing to the left of the TV? Overall nice mood lighting. Love the grainy photographs. Personalized without being pretentious or contrived.

I really like the kitchen and bedroom. Not sure about the living area - bit dark for me but it might be the photos.
Agree the coffee machine was not an important enough component to include.

The coffee machine is the close up. I have nothing against it. The platform is awesomely cool and something I thought of doing once. Great space saving idea!

Why is the shot of the coffee machine tacky? It's a bit of a useless picture as it doesn't show us anything we hadn't seen of the place yet, but I don't see how it's tacky.

Your bedroom platform looks great!

potentially could love the place but your photos suck! a close up of the tv and then of the coffee machine. then some bad lighting. only the pics of the bedroom and kitchen came out great and with those i see the "built in" design is great but can't tell what you've done beyond it. didn't seem too much at all. but super cool potential. love the bed area. love the kitchen design and cabinets.

the kitchen is sooo the best. and how did you get such a giant one in london? :) i love the bedroom platform too - what a clever way to get extra space "under the bed"!

Really like what I see, but need better shots showing the whole room -- especially the living-dining room.

I don't think the pictures did justice to what may be a great apartment. The platform bed and kitchen cabinets are fabulous! Buuuut...the TV and coffee machine are wasted images to me. :(

I love the kitchen, too but the question here is - if it's a rental did the kitchen come that way? If so, it's not the contestant that did it which means it's a room that doesn't count, IMHO.

The kitchen & bed platform are fab!
BUT I'd have rather seen crummy pix of good spaces than close ups of appliances.

It's not a rental. They own.

I like the look of the place, and I have never seen a coffee machine like that one. Quite unique. 1 close up photo is required in this contest. Why not the coffee machine?

Very nice

great kicthen, so-so for the rest.

Niot sure i get all the 'tacky' questions. Also, I wish people would leave the close up issue alone -- it is part of the contest!

sorry to be personal but what does a custom shelving system like your bed platform cost approx? sometimes making furniture fit is impossible especially when you need storage, too. what a great idea!

This could be a great space, but I have no idea. I get absolutely no sense of how the 484 sf are utilized. Awful photos. :(

I really like the custom elements of this, and since the owners obviously had some input on those, I think their taste is good. However, I think some of the other shots don't show the place in its best light.

The thing that is so nice about this place is that it actually contends with the small space in some interesting ways, which is what many comment-makers have asked for.

Ah Southampton - how I miss it!
I miss driving down to Hamble and parking by the sea and watching the ocean liners go out on a Sunday afternoon. Crawling along in traffic to get to the best bit of West Quay parking. The parks right next to the shopping. One of the best H&Ms in the world. Nicks on East Street - if you've never eaten there you should go right now - its awesome!!! Get the chicken dish with the deep-fried banana! Do you remember Snob, the clothes shop? Shirley high street with a million eateries and the best charity shops.
(my home town is Winchester! - just up the road)
