AT Survey: Toothpaste, the Ultimate Choice

4-17-toothpaste-2.jpgIt's your first night staying over.

It's been a wild, romantic affair so far, but now you are standing in their bathroom for the first time, about to brush your teeth. It's only then that you notice their toothpaste, ___________. OMG.

This one small domestic choice can tell you so much...

Do people really care about toothpaste brand?!

posted by julia on 2006-04-17 15:04:01

I was thinking the same thing Julia. I know I don't care what she uses, as long as she uses it. It's not like I have to live with her decision.

MARVIS AQUATIC MINT

posted by luigi on 2006-04-17 15:09:36

If you're looking at a person's toothpaste brand for clues to their personality you shouldn't be brushing your teeth at their place (i.e. sleeping with them.

I use Ultrabrite. It doesn't really matter to me what other people use.

posted by Kristie on 2006-04-17 15:18:57

what about that uber-groovy powder in the blue container that all the kids used to use in art school . . .
is that still around?

I'm in for Tom's (spearmint or Fennel)
or Thursday Plantation Tea Tree Mint
or something else in a cool package
flavored eucalyptus that comes from another country

(and I think this is a very funny question)

Marvis is marvelous. And looks soooo good in your medicine cabinet when your date peeks inside it to see if you have leprosy medication in there.

posted by jojo on 2006-04-17 15:29:56

JOJO! HA! That's great!

I've yet to notice a difference among toothpaste brands, but maybe I'm using the wrong stuff? I'm with Guido. I'd be more likely to buy something with cool packaging, though I've yet to find that in the toothpaste isle.

It's all about Toms of Maine, Cinnemint! Yummy...

More important than the brand...how do they keep their toothpaste?

I cannot tolerate toothpaste that is squeezed in the middle, cap left off, dried toothpaste closing off the spout. SO GROSS!

On the other hand, I would react much more favorably to someone who has a nice neat toothpaste tube, or even better, one of those things that pushes the toothpaste down as you use it.

I'm no neat freak, but that is one area that I am super-uptight about!

Any suggestion??

I use Micro-Brite tooth powder which is the only anti-oxidant dentrifice made, and it's from a company that used to call itself Royal Body Care, but they've changed their name to RBC something-or-other because around the world things can't really be "Royal" without being of a crown.

Anyway... they make some other very cool stuff, but you have to sign up and be a member, and it's kind of a pain, but pretty much worth it for some of it.

see now, there's a deal breaker

Isn't this question a little weird for ApartmentTherapy.com? Was someone bored or is this some creative marketing for toothpaste?

posted by Kate on 2006-04-17 16:19:45

Rob,
Crest makes a sort of 4" teardrop shaped dispenser(pearly/vanilla, orange/citrus or red/cinnamon)
& the stickers even easily peel off! Suprisingly, which i think is so cool of them.
It makes me enjoy brushing. And i have an aversion to busy, overdone graphics packaging, so i really appreciate it.

Otherwise, no more screw tops please!

For an occasional wash yer mouth out with soap, i use Dr. Bronners.

THis question made me laugh, because the husband and I literally spent 10 minutes in the toothpaste aisle this weekend.

"Well, maybe we should get this one - it's "original" - no bells or whistles"

"No, not that. What about this one?"

"I don't like gel"

"Um, what about a mix?"

"You can't use this peroxide one, can you?"

"No, here's one that;s purple, what about that?"

"It's a gel. I don't.."

"...like gel, right. Just pick something."

We've been buying toothpaste together for about 6 years now, and still, this is the ritual.

I admit to buying toothpaste in England at Boots because it had the most beautiful silver packaging. And it looked fabulous perched on my sink. But usually I'm a Colgate girl.

Hilarious. I agree with guido--the little device that pushes the toothpaste evenly from the bottom would be frightening to me. otherwise, don't really care, but points for an interesting label. minor points.

Marvis is an absolutely snarky aluminum colored tube with retro design from Italy. It has minty orange, peppermint, spearment, and licorice flavors. Bigalow Pharmacy and Ricky's sell it. Another eclectic choice is Euthymol (sp?) from Ireland I think (a country not known for its especially outstanding dentition)which tastes like those pink Valentine Day heart candies that say "kiss me" and stuff on them. Bigalow sells that stuff, too. Mmmm. Classy medicine cabinet = guy gets 2nd date.

Carla! Thanks guess I missed those! Not so weird then. Have a good week.

I always like to roll down the toothpaste tube as I use it - y'know, squeeze it from the end and curl it up as I go, making sure to get use of the whole tube (being cheap, I guess). I love toothpaste keys! I've owned many toothpaste keys in my lifetime (but I don't like those big dispenser thingies - my medicine cabinet is too small for big stuff like that and I don't keep toothbrushes and toothpaste out on the sink). Anyway, my husband does the opposite. He still squeezes from the end, but instead of curling it up, he obsessively flattens and straightens out the tube. That comes from being in the military - they used to go around and inspect things like that!

I buy what's on sale...and I like variety, so I switch around. I have to say, though, I really like Colgate Total. But, if I met, say, a devout Crest man, it would be no big deal. I can't even think of the kind I'm using right now.

I like Crest in the Vanilla Mint flavor. Something about my candy-impoverished / raised-by-hippies childhood led to an abiding love for a sugary-tasting toothpaste. And it whitens nicely too.

I realized several tubes ago that my husband and I would both be happier if we just each bought the toothpaste we liked. He gets some minty Tom's of Maine; I get Doctor Burt's (of Burt's Bees) CinnaMint. And the kid gets Tom's of Maine Grape AND Orange Mango.

To recap: 1 apartment, 2 adults, 1 kid, 4 toothpastes.

Whoever notices we're low on toothpaste goes to Walgreen's, stands twitchily in the narrow toothpaste aisle trying to make sense of the prices and features while being bumped by other shoppers, then finally (at the verge of panic and despair) blindly grabs whatever box is nearest.

i should have bought 40.

Christina!

How funny - I can't tell you how much time I have spent trying to find Arm and Hammer in travel size. A few places do carry it, and I too have decided when I find it, to buy tons of them. I think I have best luck at Walgreen’s and Eckerd's.

When I have found the travel size scarce, I had an elaborate scheme of noticing when my toothpaste tube was about 1/3 or 1/4 full, and at that time, I would put it in my travel case for my next trip, then put a fresh full tube in my bathroom.

I use Colgate, the white variety. I get mouthsores from using Close-Up, which has a stronger formula. I have been with two Close-Up men (the others I never stayed with long enough to know their, uh, oral preference ;)). Toothpaste preferences don't really matter as long as the guy doesn't forget to include my Colgate in the grocery list.

lori 2-

ah, your second point is a good one, i'll have to try that. walgreens is a great place to find the travel-size a & h, thanks for the tip on eckerd's.

for most other products i use those refillable plastic bottles from the container store (for shampoo, lotion, etc.) but it's such a satisfying feeling to find my a & h toothpaste and a dove body wash in travel size!! glad to know someone else out there feels the same. : )

Rembrandt. But then, I like traditional art.

It has that vaguely "expensive dentists probably use this" feel to it.

posted by valerie on 2006-04-18 08:45:07

I would be more interested in what the toothbrush looks like - has it been replaced recently? Is it super high-tech, or a basic freebie from the dentist's office? I think that could teall you a lot about someone.

posted by Christy on 2006-04-18 12:41:26

I must have Arm and Hammer with baking soda. In a pinch, another baking soda toothpaste will work. It troubles me, though, that I can't seem to find a toothpaste variation in ANY brand that doesn't have a "whitening" agent. I always stayed away from those because they freaked me out a little - peroxide on your teeth? But now apparently it's mainstream and you can't get it any other way. Even with A & H

I guess I'm alone in hating Tom's of maine in all flavors. It does have the unique distinction, for me, of being the only toothpaste that actually makes your breath worse.

posted by FDL on 2006-04-18 12:58:46

I'm with you on the Tom's of Maine FDL. Especially the fennel. But then, I HATE fennel in all forms so in toothpaste form it is especially disgusting to me.

I like Colgate original flavor myself, in the handy standup dispenser.
