apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

AT Survey: T-Shirts for 2006

11-6-tshirt.jpgWhich would you like for Xmas? Thanks so much to everyone who submitted designs for our next T-Shirt! We received many amazing designs and picked those we felt would print well and which would be the strongest to run before the crowd. Now we'd like to see which one you feel should be printed.

Remember, we're looking for a design that:

1. is visually striking
2. communicates AT's vibe
3. would be a hot seller

Some of the designs here are more detailed than others, so we are also open to suggestions as to the color of the t-shirt or ink color where it might be unspecified. We'll take all your comments and come up with a winner which we'll send off to our print shop on Monday so that we can get these back before Xmas.

2. Marilyn & Peter from f2.cc

3. Kael H.

11-30-jashiki1.jpg
4. Jashiki - - the transformation of the 8 Step Home Cure

11-30-modernista.jpg

5. Joel & Maria P. of blueantstudio - Front reads:

"Modernista" (in th Metallica font)
Subtitle: "Seek and restore"
There's a Metallica album called "Seek and destroy" I choose restore as that's what we have to do on everyday basis: restore!
The back reads: Apartment Therapy ROCKS! To tie the theme together.

12-1-hypersquigblack.jpg

6. Jashiki

12-1-manueladrip1.jpg
12-1-manueladrip2.jpg

7. Manuela H. - These entries are all based on an abstracted AT Squiggle. They are variants of each other. The second adds the "drip" that you might find in the AT Squiggle art work, to the back of the shirt as a little extra surprise.

12-1-manuelasquig.jpg

8. Manuela H. - It is the AT sguiggle in perspective and with the signature drip which I think is a nice detail.

12-1-pierre-words.jpg

9. Michael P. - Ideas from the 8 Step Home Cure. NOTE: This should say "space" instead of "house" in the tag line and the second part of the sentence should be on the back with the AT Lines above and below...

Since I work in the branding/licensing world...here's my 2 cents:

The Modernista one is the most fashion-forward example. The rest feel a bit "big graphic/Nascar-ish".

OK, back to my hole now..

I like #3. Lovely work, all!

posted by Valerie on 2006-12-01 11:41:29

I LOVE the apt concept of #2, but the front side of the shirt should have colors/graphics that still speak the branding language of AT (eg orange/green/blue colors, the little squiggly logo, AT font etc etc)

Number 4 hits that issue on the head, and I REALLY LOVE the evolution concept from squiggly to perfect circle -- so elequently communicates the AT mantra!!!!!!!

1, 3, and 9 are my favorites.

I'm thinking of a t-shirt that I would actually wear.

1 makes me smile and feel good- I like the couch/therapy pun.

3 really makes me smile :)

9 says what apartment therapy is about. it's plain, simple, and effective. just like apartment therapy :)

fun ideas all around.
i like #5 cos it could be worked into a fashion-conscious wardrobe. altho it might be rather gender-defined.
runner's up: #4, #7/8
#2 is cool, but doesn't really work for me cos AT is looking to expand cities so it'll be outdated (vintage?) soon. plus how well will that read--a lot of detail?

I also initially thought of Charlie Brown when I saw #7! Would like to see the squiggle in a color though and it may need the text Apartment Therapy to idenify it. I'm not loving #2, for me it looks too busy and doesn't have the "feel" of the site. Also like #4's evolving squiggle.

posted by jimkk on 2006-12-01 12:15:40

all of the designs are great, BUT as far as what I would buy & wear:

#1--I love its humor.

#2--this one will become a limited edition in no time, as AT will continue to expand to other cities around the world!

#4--the essence of AT

#6--classic logo (understated, yet sophisticated)

posted by GZgoingMod aka Geraldine on 2006-12-01 12:19:10

#4 or #6 - #2, although cool, seems rather techy/cold compared to the warmth of the AT experience. Plus, most of the graphic is on the back - not so great for those of us with long hair!

If #7 were to look like you had an AT squiggle wrapped around your body I would actually like that one the best, but 1) the squiggle should be in orange; and 2) this drip doesn't relate to the brand and should be removed. If we could see the front maybe that would help.

posted by eeeck on 2006-12-01 12:19:56

# 9 is great. Just switch "house" to space and put, "so your life can follow on the back, surrounded by bright colorful lines like selection #5.)

My favorite design is #4, the evolution of the squigle.

But the shirt I would be most likley to wear would be #6.

Definitely #4 or #6. And, no, I don't know Jashiki. Just very well executed.

Number 2 makes me laugh (the "Is that an antique..."); I also really like the design of number 1 ("Relax.").

(Specifying because it took me a moment to figure out if they were numbered top or bottom and wanted to be clear, but then, I'm having an easily-confused day).

posted by Kristin on 2006-12-01 13:35:06

My fave: #6 (Jashiki). 2nd fave: #8 (Manuela H.). These are the 2 I'd actually wear, especially Jashiki's design. I like the incorporation of the squiggle in J's design. In this case, less is more.

#5 seems really nonsequitur from the front to the back in its design. i like the evolution of the squiggle design, but i wouldn't wear it if it was printed on a regular huge-size tshirt. i agree with whomever said to go with american apparel tshirts because the fit is better. or maybe just some of them, for the girls out there.

I would like #1 the best if it said "relax." across the front of the shirt, and had the lounger chair and logo somewhere on the back. Maybe black with white lettering. I'd wear it in a second.

I also like #2 a lot, partly because of the black and white coloring. (I strongly disagree with the person who thought it needed color.) However, I do agree with those who thought it might be too busy. On the other hand, it really is just a simple circle.......

Actually, I like both.

posted by Lil on 2006-12-01 17:09:56

Change that last bottom circle in #4 to a Zen Circle and you have me sold! (Just kidding - love it just the way it is). That and number 6 is really nice.

Great ideas!

I think Number 4 (the transformation of the 8 Step Home Cure) is the coolest concept -- it really captures the spirit of AT -- but I think Number 6 (Jashiki) would be the hottest seller and also ties in with the concept. Great choices!

re: "Since I work in the branding/licensing world...here's my 2 cents: The Modernista one is the most fashion-forward example".

Um, I take it you don't work for licensing/branidng for Metallica, though.

Seems funny that as a licensee/brander, you would pick the one that is a total brand "borrow."

posted by patrick (the other one) on 2006-12-01 18:29:38

I like #1! I think it communicates its message cleverly and succinctly. Love how the chair looks like a person. #2 is a cool idea but visually too complicated imho. Also, the front looks like it's meant to be a logo, in which case it should be the actual AT logo. #5 is really fun, but if you're only doing one it might not be the most representative of AT.

#6 - it's the least tacky. Subtle and refined.

#2 - I guess I don't get why it's in a circle.

The rest - not very AT...

I totally missed this - I would have done one.

None of these entries executions are that inspiring. But from a concept point of view I'd give it to Brianna (entry No. 1). She's got the 2 sides of the brain working there with all of the cities covered.

Can the floorplan be reworked to look more brain-like?

Good job B.

posted by Pedro on 2006-12-01 19:58:08

CORRECTION! The brain idea is Marilyn and Peter's from f2cc. So my vote is for them, not Brianna.

Good job Marilyn and Peter.

Sorry Brianna.

posted by Pedro on 2006-12-01 20:01:26

I love 2 and like 8.

Number 1 just seems to be asking for trouble.

posted by Lisa from VA on 2006-12-01 20:14:24

Why is the #2 "AT apartment" a circle, exactly?
And why is it separated like lobes of a brain, or is that the point and I am totally missing it? And IF a brain, um, why exactly?

Not loving the idea of bringing in anything remotely "tagliney" to the mix right now, and don't think characterizing ATers as "Modernistas" is quite on the mark, either.

Love the transformation *idea* of #4, but doesn't that then imply that the AT squiggle reflects our lives/homes in chaos? That's certainly not the association I've had with that logo/mark, or this site, ever, (nor do I think it the best one to associate with AT) so that's why I get stuck on that one...

Like the Charlie Brown squiggle one, but don't get the point of the paint drip.

Sorry, it's been a VERRRYYYY long week, and I guess I am in a seriously literal mindset right now.

posted by patrick (the other one) on 2006-12-01 21:18:21

P2, friend, we all have to start somewhere, not necessarily chaos, but through the AT process we gain greater clarity and purpose. the AT mantra, changing the world one apt at a time.

posted by flip on 2006-12-01 21:29:26

Yeah, but shouldn't the logo be the culmination of that process, not the starting point? Otherwise the logo should be the perfect circle part of the sequence, no?

Sorry, still have my conceptual/brand hat on. DOn't mind me!

posted by patrick (the other one) on 2006-12-01 21:32:11

p2, myself, i believe AT beckons us to begin , so it can never represent the culmination of the process. perhaps it should be a circle--theoretically speaking--but visually it works

#2 = Clever.

#6 sophisticated, and focused and saturated with color.

posted by patrick on 2006-12-01 22:12:37

Although some are interesting, I'd have to go with 6, 7, or 8. They're solid.

Bottom line: the top seller (and probably most wearable t-shirt will have a bold graphic. #8 is my personal fave. It puts a nice spin on the squiggle graphic which has become the Apartment Therapy bat signal, if you will. :)

Mostly, I agree with patrick the other one's comments about #s 2,4, & 5 not working right. And I think the paint drip (in 7 & 8) is modeled after the AT artwork that Maxwell paints, which is kinda cool - though I bet it could be taken out.

posted by Luke on 2006-12-01 22:17:01

All are so creative, but my vote is #5 - sleek, modern, sexy, to the point. Afterall, seek and restore is what we're all doing (although I'd say 'seek and refine').

#9 would be my second choice. I definitely think the AT colors need to be kept.

Will be interesting to see what we end up with.

posted by Jackie(the original one) on 2006-12-01 22:39:10

Wow terrific entries.

I really like the relax shirt because it is simple and bold but the message doesn't quite fit the site. I wouldn't call AT a relaxing website (he he) - there are a lot of dynamic personalities here, me included, and tons of opinions flying around, which is why we all are addicted to AT. I don't think AT wants to relax people, I think it's about making folks AWARE of what they are doing in their homes, how they are living, and that they need to change things because it may not be working for them. It's also a place for those who know they need help and flock to for advice. It's a meeting of the minds. A design think tank.

I think it's important to stick with the AT squiggle no matter what. That is your brand. You can't exchange your brand for a well-known chair design. You want people to see the squiggle and think AT - seeing the le corbusier chair may make people think that AT is perhaps a furniture site. Plus, how many AT readers own a chair like that? You don't want to give the impression that this site is geared towards living the good life.
You want to get the word out, via the shirt, that AT isn't a furniture site, it's a site geared towards helping others come together who share a love of design, need help, and who seek to live in a home that reflects their individual style.

But of course, the above entries are strong and I'm sure that everyone is wayyyyyyy more experienced on this topic than I am. I'm just thinking about what would appeal to me if I had never heard of AT in my life. Oh what a sad, sad thought.

Best,
Holly

Although, hmmmm, maybe after you simplify, energize, and center, you can simply....relax.

posted by nadine on 2006-12-02 09:19:14

I like number 3 without the text or number 6 either without the squiggle or there needs to be more space between the squiggle and the text. I generally don't like to wear shirts with stuff on them so simpler or more abstract the better.

posted by charlene on 2006-12-02 11:23:00

For striking design, #7 would be my pick (add "ApartmentTherapy.com" in the traditional left-nipple position, and you're there) -- but I suspect it will cost a fortune to print because of the non-standard placement.

I share p(too)'s literal-minded concerns about #2 and #4 -- the designs are so clever, but then when you think about them too hard, they potentially contradict your message. (I could accept a universe in which I need to drink more and analyze less, though.)

Least favorite is #5 -- you have a potential font licensing problem, plus the "Modernista" message may quickly become outdated as the design world shifts to the neo-Baroque look. That trend has been so hotly disputed here that you may not want to make it part of your brand identity (especially as some blog posts, such as the crystal stove vent, advocate neo-Baroque products).

posted by Elizabeth on 2006-12-03 05:35:25

At first I was agreeing with the #4 naysayers who felt that the AT squiggle should be the outcome of the cure, rather than the starting point. After giving it some thought, however (because I really like #4, as do a lot of other people, it seems), I think that if we look at the AT squiggle as some sort of organic primordial form, something living and breathing and changeable, like our homes, then it works.

Why can't #4 just represent the eight steps to molding your home into the shape that works for you? Instead of looking at step 1, the squiggle, as a diseased home waiting to be fixed, why not look at it as the raw starting point of a home waiting to be transformed?

posted by Lil on 2006-12-03 09:56:20

By the way, I also agree with the person who thought that #4's message could potentially get lost if the shirt was tucked in. Maybe the transformation going across the chest and "apartmenttherapy.com" across the back?

I don't know, I always like shirts with a graphic on the front as well as the back.
